2018 FINE ART

We have received two email messages seeking clarification about the new Scope of Competition for the 2018 Fine Art competition. The points raised and the clarification provided is outlined below.

The key elements of the Scope of Competition are state:

Fine art photography has no universally agreed upon meaning or definition. However, fine art photography does go beyond just capturing an image and cropping. Therefore, an image must not be submitted into this competition if it would have qualified for a CAPA competition with a Restricted Editing Criteria such as: Nature, Photo Journalism or Wildlife.

The goal of fine art photography is in creating a fine art image is to use subjects and techniques as vehicles in the process of conveying a strong message, idea, vision and/or emotion.

So the question has been raised – “can a nature or wildlife image be submitted into the Fine Art competition with the above noted key elements?” Yes – however the image must go beyond mere capturing of an image, cropping and making minor changes to the image.

Another question raised was “can I submit a ‘once-in-a-lifetime amazing nature photo’ in the 2018 Fine Art Competition? “ No. However, this photo can be submitted in the 2018 Nature and/or the 2019 Open Theme competitions.

Why were these changes made? Over the past year, we have received many complaints that nature and wildlife images have dominated the Fine Art Competition while others felt that these images did not meet the Scope of Competition.

The emphasis in our CAPA competitions is to provide an equal opportunity for all photographers and encourage them to enter competitions when their images meet the Scope of Competition.

In reviewing the past three years of CAPA Fine Art competitions, it was discovered that:

  • It appears that the competition hosts did not pre-screen the submitted images to ensure only images that met the Scope of Competition were presented on the ‘day-of-judging’
  • Selected judges had a strong background in nature/wildlife photography

To correct this situation and ensure an equal opportunity for all photographers, the following steps have been implemented:

  • refinement of the 2018 Fine Art Competition Scope of Competition
  • three judges have been selected who are all Certified CAPA Judges and have extensive experience with the topic of Fine Art
  • updated the CAPA Competition Standards to include support for the Competition Host:

A Review Committee of two or more Certified CAPA Judges may be appointed by the Director of Competitions or the Competition Chair Person to preview images/presentations submitted to a CAPA competition to ensure all the images/presentations comply with the competition details webpage and will advise the Director or the Competition Chair Person of their findings.

  • all CAPA competition detail webpages contain a Special Note at the bottom which states: Questions about the scope of the competition and/or the editing criteria should be directed to the Competition Coordinator prior to the closing day of the competition. For the Fine Art Competition – the Competition Coordinator is Derek Hayes (Certified CAPA Judge & recognized fine art photographer and author) – derek@derekhayes.ca

A post-competition review will be undertaken to determine if further refinements are necessary for our Fine Art competitions.

Opening Competitions for Uploading of Images

We have only opened up the three competitions for this fall because we are expecting to receive then upload the new enhancements to our online competition system.

To minimize any disruptions and the risk of loosing submitted images, we will be opening up the competitions in stages as follows:

  • November 1, 2018 – Altered Reality Competition and Monochrome Competition
  • January 1, 2018 – 2019 Open Theme Competition and 2019 A Series of 4 Photos Competition
  • February 1, 2019 – Portrait Competition
  • March 1, 2019 – 2019 Canada: My Country Competition
  • April 1, 2019 – 2019 Annual Photo Challenge Competition.

Noted open dates are 1 to 2 months prior to the closing date of the competition.

2019 Audio Visual Presentation Competition

The previous Special Note – For a club submission for this competition – at least two people must be involved in creating the audio visual presentation” has been revoked and replaced with:

CAPA individual members and camera clubs are limited to one AV submission. For a club submission for this competition, the audio visual presentation can be from 1 or 2 club members.

Monochrome Competition

  • Question: Is a sepia image admissible into the Monochrome Competition?

Response: The definition for Monochrome is what is defined by FIAP and is included below:

A black and white work fitting from the very dark grey (black) to the very clear grey (white) is a monochrome work with the various shades of grey. A black and white work toned entirely in a single colour will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category. On the other hand a black and white work modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one colour becomes a colour work (polychrome) to stand in the colour category.

Sepia is defined as “a tone added to a black and white photograph in the darkroom to “warm” up the tones (though since it is still a monochromatic image it is still considered black and white).”

Therefore, a sepia image is permitted because it is a single colour which remains a monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category.

  • Question: Is there a limit on the age of photos submitted?

Response: Based on the recent rule changes for the 2019 Four Nations Competition, we have revised our CAPA Eligibility Criteria to include:

#10 – “I will endeavour to submit a current image for CAPA competitions”

We will NOT be strictly policing this point by verifying the data contained in the image’s metadata details. However, we encourage photographers to consider this new revision.

It is CAPA’s intention to offer services to its members in both English and French. With this in mind, we are working to the best of our abilities on French translations of the website’s main pages. This is a demanding task and will require some time to achieve. We appreciate your patience.

Octobre 2018, nouvelles des concours

BEAUX-ARTS 2018

Pacific Zone News

Hi Everyone,

Dennis has received this from Terry Webb of the Pacific Digital Photography Club and forwarded it to me for distribution. From what I understand, the CAPA Slide Show Competition is really popular this year. Please let your clubs know of this competition. I hope there is lots of interest!

As you are aware, the PZ News is on hold until we can find someone to work with it. If any of you are interested in getting this news out to our clubs and members, please let me know. Please also ask your clubs if they have any aspiring editors in their membership.

I will also forward this notice to Kayla to include in the CAPA monthly newsletter. We can keep these news bits flowing there too.

I have one more piece of great news! Just this week I was delighted to welcome Cheryl Bramble as District Rep. to the Central Interior District. I know her passion and enthusiasm will be passed on to the clubs and members here.

Thanks for you help and enjoy this Spring weather and photo ops!

Pacific Zone Football Photogs

Don’t miss this Football Photography Opportunity:

There are still spaces available for our photographers at the BC Lions vs Hamilton Tiger Cats Football game September 22, 2018!

Aaron Martin from the B.C. Lions has made purchasing a ticket simple: The price is $56.00 initially, but when you actually choose a seat/s, it goes down to $50. each. There’s a $2.00 fee on top of the $50 all-in ticket price, so people are paying a bit more for the ease of buying through the link:

.  Please contact Lynda Miller for the discount code. Purchasing this way allows Aaron to track the ticket holders and make sure they get all the information about timing and details of this game.

This year there are no restrictions on lens size or equipment. The caveat is that you must not get in the way of other football fans or anyone else. Everyone who comes to the game and photographs must also realize that these images are for personal use, not for sale!

You can call Aaron at 604-930-5454, if you have questions, although it is easiest to use the link above. I know everyone is to have fun photographing and watching this game!

2018 Four Nations Competition

For this competition, CAPA was required to select 80 images from different photographers and image appropriate for inclusion into one of four categories: Nature (15 images), Monochrome (15 images), Open (35 images) and My Country (15 images).

The 50 to 75 images from each of our 2017-2018 ‘Club’ & ‘Individual’ competitions were shortlisted and re-judged by a separate team of Certified CAPA judges. Based on their scoring, the top 80 images were selected as CAPA’s submission to this competition.

Overall Competition Standings

With regards to communicating the individual scores for this competition, the guideline and rules states as follows:

To maintain the spirit of this competition in that it is primary an “Inter-Society Competition” and not an individual event,  each participating society will keep the scores confidential and will not distribute the scores to their 80 members who submitted their images.

Despite the fact that we are not permitted to distribute the individual scores from this competition, we have included below the 80 CAPA image titles, photographers and camera clubs the respective photographer is a member of.

Many thanks to these dedicated photographers who permitted us to include their outstanding image in this competition and to represent Canada.

As outlined above, CAPA has now won this competition for the 5th consecutive year.

New Photo Forum

Now for open to all Individual CAPA Members. CAPA now has a new Theme Discussion Group on Line.

Under the Members Tab – scroll down to the “Photo Forum Tab” to find the theme and all instructions as to how to look at, submit and comment on photographs.

This is not a competition – just a way for members to submit up to 3 images on a theme and then all members who are also submitting can give comments on the image.

This is intended to be fun and a learning experience – no medals – no certificates or awards of any kind – just the fun of photography and a discussion with fellow photographers. We invite all new members and members who would enjoy the thrill of shooting a specific subject and submitting it for discussion by other members. Do not worry if you are experienced or not – this is for fun. You may want to try different techniques and need feedback as to whether or not these techniques add to your image. There is no need to be embarrassed or worry about whether or not your image will qualify – this is for fun and learning!

Our new Theme for this September to December is “WE WELCOME FALL”. If you have questions or comments, please email carolcoleman@shaw.ca.

Volunteers for Competition Chairs

Seeking Volunteers

We have updated our CAPA Competition Standards to streamline our processes and incorporated the new role for a Competition Chair Person for each competition.

A Chair Person will oversee and work with a Competition Host to ensure the smooth running of a competition by:

  • providing Competition Host with appropriate documentation
  • answering any question that may arise
  • assisting in the selection of the most appropriate judges
  • assisting in determining if a submitted image meets the Scope of Competition
  • recommending to the Director of Competitions that a specific image be disqualified and the rationale for doing so
  • advising the competition entrants of the competition results
  • reviewing the competition results to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to sending it to the Director of Competitions for review/approval

Photo Fredericton: Report

by Jane Smith (http://www.photofredericton.ca )

Our year at Photo Fredericton got off to a great start with Fran Harris as our guest speaker, she shared photographs with us in her African presentation on Tanzania & Botswana.

Later in January we had our monthly competition in a CAPA Theme of Altered Reality, many great entries were put forth by our members some real talent and imagination.

February started with a wonderful guest speaker from UNB – Joy Cummings-Dickinson –Media Services @UNB who shared many images she takes for UNB publications and some of her techniques she uses in difficult lighting situations.

Later in the month it was another competition; Competition Night – CAPA competition, Spring – open. Once again with many amazing photographs by our members.

In March we hosted NB College of Craft and Design Photography Students, always a great turn out to hear the students show off their work and their new and innovative ideas.

At the end of the month we tried a change of pace from competitions and tried a critique night the theme was Macro work, all those interested in bringing in Macro photo to get some constructive critique did so and it was a nice evening with out the pressure of competition encouraging more discussion on the photographs.

April saw Fran Harris a sports photographer for Team NB and an official photographer for the Canada Games show us a great array of her images from the games as also shared with us tips and techniques for getting great actions shots in the field.

After the success of March’s critique night we hosted a second one on Theme People/portraits.

May our guest speaker was Karen Ruet a photography instructor from the College of Craft and Design who gave us a wonderful talk on making a story in a photo a journalistic approach.

New Club: St, Croix Click

St, Croix Click: Joined CAPA in May, 2018. Welcome!

Saint Croix Click is a small group of photo enthusiasts based in St. Stephen, New Brunswick. There are around twenty four members, a core group of which actively attend the monthly meetings. There’s a larger following of over 100 people on Facebook.

Meetings consist of a constructive criticism of five photos submitted by members each month, followed by a presentation by a guest speaker, or a member. Presentations have included topics such as understanding of aperture and depth of field, macro photography, capturing movement, tips on taking really sharp photos, light and composition, post-processing and editing. There have also been interactive presentations on the use of studio lighting to practice portrait and macro photography.

We’ve also had a full day session on the basics of using a digital camera, which was an excellent refresher course for some, and a chance to learn new tips and procedures for all.

The club has occasionally joined with Fundy Camera Club from Saint John on joint field trip outings, to Ministers Island in St. Andrews and to the Kingston Peninsula.
