January 2019 Competition News

Update – Canada: My Country competition

The Musée National de la Photographie (MNP) in association with CAPA and Olympus will host a three month print exhibition from January to the end of March 2020 called “2020 Salon My Country.” A total of 39 images representing our Country with 3 images depicting each province & territory.

All images submitted into the 2019 Canada: My Country competition will be considered for selection as the top 39 (3 images per theme) winning images for the 2020 Salon My Country.

The Director of Competitions will contact each entrant whose image was selected as one of the top 39 images and request that they provide their selected image with the following parameters for printing by MNP

  • minimum size of image file – 10 MB
  • image print size – minimum 11 x 14 inches or maximum 16 x 20 inches
  • Resolution – 300 pixels/inch

During the Salon, the organizers will recognize 3 images that best represent the province/territory.

Clarification:

This is not a ‘restricted editing criteria’ competition. Therefore, you do not need to have available the original RAW file or the original un-touched JPEG file, but must be able to provide a printable file per above parameters.

This competition closes on April 30, 2019.

Check out the details of the Canada: My Country Competition webpage for details. If you have any questions about this competition or the 2020 Salon My Country, please email the Director of Competitions at competitions@capacanada.ca or Alain Dubeau for those wishing clarification in French at Quebec@capacanada.ca

All copyright will remain with the photographer. CAPA, MNP & Olympus may use the images for promotional purposes with credits to the photographer.

Revised – A CAPA Series of Four Images Competition

Competition details for this competition have been re-fined to provide more clarity.

The revision is outlined below in  yellow :

Two Parallel Competitions – a CAPA Photo Series ‘Individual’ Competition, open only to CAPA members, and a CAPA Photo Series ‘Club’ Competition, open to CAPA member camera clubs. In the ‘individual’ competition CAPA members can upload a maximum of 4 images to complete a series. In the ‘club’ competition camera clubs can upload a maximum of 2 series of 4 images each,  but each series must be from at least 2 different photographers and no photographer may enter in more than one of the series.  For both the Individual and Club components of this competition, CAPA medals and Honourable Mention Ribbons will be awarded to entrants with the highest aggregate scores. Merit Award Ribbons will be awarded to the top three individual images.

Clarification:

This is not a ‘restricted editing criteria’ competition. Therefore, you do not need to have available the original RAW file or the original un-touched JPEG file.

This competition is now open and images can be uploaded. It closes February 28th, 2019. Hosting Camera Club – Shuswap Photographic Arts Club – Competition Coordinator – Henry Schnell – hatschnell@yahoo.com

Open Theme Competition

This competition is also now open for uploading of your images.

Clarification:

This is not a ‘restricted editing criteria’ competition. Therefore, you do not need to have available the original RAW file or the original un-touched JPEG file.

This competition closes February 20th, 2019. Hosting Camera Club – Toronto Digital Photography Club – Competition Coordinator– Lance Gitter at capa@tdpc.ca

Altered Reality Competition

This competition is now open and closes on January 15, 2019 at midnight (Central Standard Time – Ontario).

Clarifications:

  1.  This is not a ‘restricted editing criteria’ competition. Therefore, you do not need to have available the original RAW file or the original un-touched JPEG file.
  2. Can I submit a caricature image for this competition? The answer is YES.
Competition closes on January 15, 2019 at midnight (Central Standard Time – Ontario) and is being hosted by Lance Gitter at capa@rhcameraclub.ca

Monochrome

For this competition, we have five different themes.
An entrant can enter one or more images in any of the five themes. Both camera clubs or individual CAPA members must enter images in at least two themes.
Based on messages received, we have expanded the Animals/Birds theme to include (wild or domesticated)

Clarifications:

  1. If my image is not in the right theme will it be moved by the Competition Host into the right theme? The answer is No.
  2.  Is a ‘sepia’ image permitted in this competition. The answer is Yes because sepia is a form of photographic toning – a tone which has been added to a black and white photographer to ‘warm’ up the tones. Sepia tones images are still considered a black and white image for our competition.
  3.  Will my image be disqualified if it is deemed not to be in the right theme? The answer is Yes.
  4. Which theme would I enter a covered bridge in? The answer is Architecture theme.
  5. I am considering in submitting a monochrome photograph of an aircraft. If so, what theme could I submit under? The answer is – aircraft would not fit in any theme unless it could be included in a Landscape theme.
  6. If an image could possibly be in more than one theme – the primary focal point of the image should be used to determine what theme it should be in. If the situation is unclear then the entrant will be given the benefit of the doubt.
  7.  This is not a ‘restricted editing criteria’ competition. Therefore, you do not need to have available the original RAW file or the original un-touched JPEG file.

This competition closes on January 30, 2019 and is being hosted by the Director of Competitions.
If you have questions about this competition, please email the Director of Competitions at competitions@capacanada.ca

COMPETITION: SEEKING CLARIFICATION

Over the past few weeks, we have received several enquires seeking clarification on specific points. Each of these enquires are listed below along with our corresponding response:

  1. QUESTION: Regarding the 2019 Monochrome competition, I wondering which of the theme (Human, Landscape, Architecture, Flower/Plants, Animal) I would select to upload an image of a vehicle or aircraft?
RESPONSE: The answer is Architecture. CAPA defines architecture as “the capture by means of photography of the activity of designing and constructing buildings and other physical structures by a person or a machine. A wider definition often includes design of the total built environment, from the macro level of how a building ingrates with its surrounding man made landscape to the micro level of architectural details and some times, furniture.”The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines architecture as “formation or construction resulting from or as if from a conscious act” and “a unifying or coherent form or structure.”
  2. QUESTION: Is Sepia accepted in the Monochome competition?
RESPONSE: – Yes. Sepia is a form of photographic print toning – a tone added to a black and white photograph in the darkroom to “warm” up the tones (though since it is still a monochromatic image it is still considered black and white).
  3. QUESTION: I’ve heard a rumour that CAPA now is not permitting older images to be entered into a CAPA competition. Could you confirm this point?
RESPONSE: In July 2018, we updated our CAPA Eligibility Criteria to include the following in italic:
The photographer asserts and agrees “that I will endeavour to submit a current image for a CAPA competition.” This provision was added as a requirement for CAPA images to be accepted into the international Four Nations competition. As the outlines, the new revision states ‘endeavour’ and does not state ‘must’ or ‘should.’  Therefore, we leave it to the good judgement of each photographer.  The Director of Competitions will not be checking the image’s metadata details for the date of capture nor for the date the image was processed.

Glass Works

by Marianna Armata

The foundation for the Glass Works Portrait Series germinated the first time I shot a portrait of someone peering through a glass object.

A few years ago, my son came to visit and found a cheap lens doubler among my photo gear “toys.” Hearing that it’s the worst lens I ever bought, he took it apart. When he did, we discovered one of the lenses inside was tack sharp, while the other was a useless piece of plastic. He pulled the good lens up to his eye and . . . bingo! It was love at first sight.

2019 Altered Reality Competition

The closing date for this competition is January 15, 2019. Competition is now open for the uploading of your images. The Scope of Competition remains the same as our last year’s competition. 2019 Monochrome Competition

The closing date for this competition is January 30, 2019. Competition is now open for the uploading of your images. As you will recall, our 2018 Black & White Competition was extremely popular and we received more images than expected. Consequently, the hosting of the competition was quite demanding.

To offset the management of our 2019 Monochrome competition, we have created five different themes:

  1. Human Individual/Groups (street photography is included)
  2. Landscape/City-scape/Sea-scape
  3. Architecture (inside/outside)
  4. Flowers/Plants (wild or cultivated)
  5. Animals/Birds (wild or feral)

Depending on the volume of images received, we may need to have than one team to judge specific themes.

Questions

We had a few some questions about the Animals/Birds category:

  1.  “does this mean, a bird or animal, say captured in a sanctuary or on a reserve is not included?”
There are no restriction on images being submitted. So photographers can submit images of a bird or animal captured in a sanctuary or on a reserve.
  2.  “does the no restriction includes all kinds of animals like domestic pets or birds? Or do we stick to wild or feral?”
All animals and bird are included.

Special Note

One point to remember for this competition is that entrants must enter at least 1 image in 2 different themes.

If you have questions about this competition, please email the Competition Host representative – Sheldon Boles at seboles@telus.net

With regards to our Monochrome Competition, three photographers asked if a sepia tone is permitted then why is not a duo tone permitted in this competition. My response to this point was as follows:

Our monochrome competition does include the FIAP Monochrome definition which is used by 94 camera societies around the world. It states as follows:

A black and white work fitting from the very dark grey (black) to the very clear grey (white) is a monochrome work with the various shades of grey. A black and white work toned entirely in a single colour will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category. On the other hand a black and white work modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one colour becomes a colour work (polychrome) to stand in the colour category.

CAPA’s supplements this definition by stating as follows:

A sepia image is considered a monochrome image. A ‘duo-toned’ image is not considered a monochrome image for the purposes of this competition.

Sepia is a reddish-brown colour named after the rich brown pigment brown derived from the ink sac of the common cuttlefish Sepia. I have included a CAPA sepia images that was received a 2018 Four Nations Gold medal.

The point you were emphasizing is contained in the FIAP Monochrome definition above and is re-stated below:

A black and white work toned entirely in a single colour will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category. On the other hand a black and white work modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one colour becomes a colour work (polychrome) to stand in the colour category.

Therefore, if two tones are used or partially toned with a single hue in addition to the base hue then the image becomes a Duo Tone image and would not be acceptable as it would be considered a colour image.

What I must be emphasized is that the submission of images to our CAPA competitions must meet the specific competition’s Scope of Competition and not on the interpretations one makes on details found elsewhere on internet or Facebook.

Each of our competitions are developed and refined on the contribution of leading CAPA photographers and internationally recognized judges.

New District Rep for Pacific

I would like to announce a New District Representative who will represent CAPA on the Sunshine Coast.  Please welcome Janet Slater to this role.  She is responsible for the Sunshine Coast Shutterbugz, a new CAPA club.

Janet has been a long time member of the Langley camera club as well as an individual member of CAPA.  She and her husband have recently retired to this community from Langley.  At the moment they are living in their 5th wheel awaiting the arrival of a new grandbaby, and a move into their new home around Christmas time.
