Overall Competition Standings

With regards to communicating the individual scores for this competition, the guideline and rules states as follows:

To maintain the spirit of this competition in that it is primary an “Inter-Society Competition” and not an individual event,  each participating society will keep the scores confidential and will not distribute the scores to their 80 members who submitted their images.

Despite the fact that we are not permitted to distribute the individual scores from this competition, we have included below the 80 CAPA image titles, photographers and camera clubs the respective photographer is a member of.

Many thanks to these dedicated photographers who permitted us to include their outstanding image in this competition and to represent Canada.

As outlined above, CAPA has now won this competition for the 5th consecutive year.

Many thanks to the three international judges who volunteered to view and score all the submitted images:

  • Jon Fishback – APSA, ARPS (Director of PSA Education Services) – Photographic Society of America
  • Sharp Todd – HonPSA, GMPSA/B – Photographic Society of America
  • John Craig – Photographic Society of America

The 2019 Four Nations competition was hosted by the Canadian Association For Photographic Art and was coordinated by Sheldon Boles – Director of Competitions.

New Photo Forum

Now for open to all Individual CAPA Members. CAPA now has a new Theme Discussion Group on Line.

Under the Members Tab – scroll down to the “Photo Forum Tab” to find the theme and all instructions as to how to look at, submit and comment on photographs.

This is not a competition – just a way for members to submit up to 3 images on a theme and then all members who are also submitting can give comments on the image.

This is intended to be fun and a learning experience – no medals – no certificates or awards of any kind – just the fun of photography and a discussion with fellow photographers. We invite all new members and members who would enjoy the thrill of shooting a specific subject and submitting it for discussion by other members. Do not worry if you are experienced or not – this is for fun. You may want to try different techniques and need feedback as to whether or not these techniques add to your image. There is no need to be embarrassed or worry about whether or not your image will qualify – this is for fun and learning!

Our new Theme for this September to December is “WE WELCOME FALL”. If you have questions or comments, please email carolcoleman@shaw.ca.

Volunteers for Competition Chairs

Seeking Volunteers

We have updated our CAPA Competition Standards to streamline our processes and incorporated the new role for a Competition Chair Person for each competition.

A Chair Person will oversee and work with a Competition Host to ensure the smooth running of a competition by:

  • providing Competition Host with appropriate documentation
  • answering any question that may arise
  • assisting in the selection of the most appropriate judges
  • assisting in determining if a submitted image meets the Scope of Competition
  • recommending to the Director of Competitions that a specific image be disqualified and the rationale for doing so
  • advising the competition entrants of the competition results
  • reviewing the competition results to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to sending it to the Director of Competitions for review/approval

If you are interested in becoming one of our Competition mentors, please email our Director of Competitions at competitions@capacanada.ca for more details.

Photo Fredericton: Report

Photo Fredericton: Report

by Jane Smith (http://www.photofredericton.ca )

Our year at Photo Fredericton got off to a great start with Fran Harris as our guest speaker, she shared photographs with us in her African presentation on Tanzania & Botswana.

Later in January we had our monthly competition in a CAPA Theme of Altered Reality, many great entries were put forth by our members some real talent and imagination.

February started with a wonderful guest speaker from UNB – Joy Cummings-Dickinson –Media Services @UNB who shared many images she takes for UNB publications and some of her techniques she uses in difficult lighting situations.

Later in the month it was another competition; Competition Night – CAPA competition, Spring – open. Once again with many amazing photographs by our members.

In March we hosted NB College of Craft and Design Photography Students, always a great turn out to hear the students show off their work and their new and innovative ideas.

At the end of the month we tried a change of pace from competitions and tried a critique night the theme was Macro work, all those interested in bringing in Macro photo to get some constructive critique did so and it was a nice evening with out the pressure of competition encouraging more discussion on the photographs.

April saw Fran Harris a sports photographer for Team NB and an official photographer for the Canada Games show us a great array of her images from the games as also shared with us tips and techniques for getting great actions shots in the field.

After the success of March’s critique night we hosted a second one on Theme People/portraits.

May our guest speaker was Karen Ruet a photography instructor from the College of Craft and Design who gave us a wonderful talk on making a story in a photo a journalistic approach.

Mervyn Kumar-Misir was also acknowledged for his 50 years of service to the club.

The Photographic Guild held several fieldtrips before breaking for the summer to work on the next season’s program. Members went to Jerry Lawrence Provincial Park and photographed the song birds returning from their spring migration in May. In June, club members explored the Avondale Trail System and the Avon Sky Winery and practiced their macro photography in the lovely gardens of Maria and Laszlo Podor.

New Club: St, Croix Click

St, Croix Click: Joined CAPA in May, 2018. Welcome!

Saint Croix Click is a small group of photo enthusiasts based in St. Stephen, New Brunswick. There are around twenty four members, a core group of which actively attend the monthly meetings. There’s a larger following of over 100 people on Facebook.

Meetings consist of a constructive criticism of five photos submitted by members each month, followed by a presentation by a guest speaker, or a member. Presentations have included topics such as understanding of aperture and depth of field, macro photography, capturing movement, tips on taking really sharp photos, light and composition, post-processing and editing. There have also been interactive presentations on the use of studio lighting to practice portrait and macro photography.

We’ve also had a full day session on the basics of using a digital camera, which was an excellent refresher course for some, and a chance to learn new tips and procedures for all.

The club has occasionally joined with Fundy Camera Club from Saint John on joint field trip outings, to Ministers Island in St. Andrews and to the Kingston Peninsula.

Stratford CC Closes

Sometimes there is good news to report, and at other times, sad news. This is the latter as after 55 years, one of CAPA’s long-time member clubs is closing its doors.

The Stratford Camera Club, in Stratford, Ontario has had a long and distinguished history. It was first established on June 13, 1900, charging $2 for men and $1 for women. Since then the club has folded and restarted twice, first in 1939 and most recently in 1963.

The photographers who re-established the club in 1963 had the aim of encouraging members in their photographic endeavours, and providing opportunities to improve their skills through instruction, competitions, outings and guest speakers. The Club’s core objectives remained the same over the years, with the addition of competitions and social events between Stratford and other area camera clubs.

The Club met twice a month from September to May with a general meeting at Gallery Stratford and a monthly workshop at various nearby locations. Club outings were organised both for photography and socialising.

The Stratford Camera Club has enjoyed presentations from well-known photographic artists such as Maria Zorn, Bob and Peter Wood (authors of the book “Bright Wings”) and Freeman Patterson. A juried photographic salon was held at Gallery Stratford to celebrate the Club’s 40th anniversary. In recent years Kaleidoscope, an annual audio-visual and print show, was held at Woodland Towers Retirement Home. In addition to enjoying the beautiful prints, members of the community were treated to some inspiring AV shows.

With membership dwindling over the last few years, the executive felt it was time to take a break and the Club held its last meeting on May 15th, 2018. The Club has established a bursary for a high school student in Stratford who will peruse further studies in photography. With the sale of their remaining equipment they will be able to offer the scholarship for another year.

My thanks to Doug Bingham for providing the details about the Club’s background.

Since the club has a history of resurfacing, I look forward to seeing the next generation of the Stratford Camera Club. In the meantime, best wishes to the club members as they pursue their photographic interests through other venues.
