Harbour City Photography Club in Nanaimo is presenting a Photo Salon from May 27th to June 14. This is a juried exhibition showcasing nearly 100 Vancouver Island Photographers.

Capturing the beauty of the Island is something that comes naturally to the Victoria Camera Club’s members, but especially for Mike Wooding, Leah Gray and Daniel Rondeau, whose photos have been selected to represent Canada in the Four Nations Photography Competition.
We have lots of photo field trips but we only have one true photo Workshop for the Canadian Camera Conference this year (CCC2019). On Monday July 15, we have our speaker Rafal Wegiel teaching an all-day class on how he creates unique headshots. See his latest sample below.

This year will see the introduction of new categories: the CAPA Focus, the Youth Focus, Male and Female Focus and the Team-Rally Focus. Also new this year, participants must register as Supporting Members of the Musée National de la Photographie prior to submitting their application.

Fasciné par l’image, Carlos Richer a complété un baccalauréat en arts visuels avec spécialisation en photographie à l’Université d’OYawa, tout en travaillant comme projectionniste dans un cinéma de
répertoire.
En 1992, Carlos s’installe à Montréal pour travailler comme photographe de plateau, puis entreprend des études en infographie au Collège Marsan, question d’amorcer le virage numérique sur Adobe
Photoshop 1.5 Son diplôme en poche et passionné de Photoshop, il débute une carrière dans l’enseignement en photographie, en infographie et en multimédia.
En 2004, Carlos Richer fait l’acquisition du Collège Marsan qu’il dirige depuis. Il offre aussi ses services à titre de consultant en imagerie numérique et en photographie panoramique auprès d’agences de
publicité et de grandes entreprises.
En 2018, Carlos se joint à l’équipe de ESMA avec les Collèges SaleYe et Marsan dans les nouveaux locaux au 3536 boulevard St-Laurent (l’ancien cinéma ExCentristi.
Depuis 2012 Carlos Richer donne aussi plusieurs conférences sur l’inspiration, la créativité et comment trouver sa voix photographique.
The Canadian Association for Photographic Art strives to promote and disseminate the art and science of photography in all its forms for the use and benefit of its members.
With this objective in mind, CAPA’s Quebec Zone plans to offer its individual members and the members of its Clubs a theoretical and practical one-day workshop dealing with Black and White photography.
Please note: this is not a Lightroom and Photoshop workshop, but one dedicated to the application of intermediate and advanced techniques in the creation of photographic images.
With a fascination for images, Carlos Richer completed a bachelor degree in visual arts with a specialization in photography at the University of Ottawa, while working as a projectionist in a repertory
film cinema.
Carlos moved to Montreal in 1992 to work as a film set photographer before undertaking studies in computer graphics at the College Marsan in order to meet the digital challenge with Adobe Photoshop
1.5 With his diploma in hand and a passion for Photoshop, he launched his teaching career in
photography, computer graphics and multimedia.
In 2004, Carlos Richer acquired the College Marsan which he has directed ever since. He also offers his services as a consultant in digital imagery and panoramic photography to advertising agencies and large
enterprises.
In 2018, Carlos joined the ESMA team with the Colleges Salette and Marsan, in a new location at 3536, Saint-Laurent Boulevard (previously the ExCentris Cinemati.
Since 2012, Carlos Richer gives presentations on inspiration, on creativity and on finding one’s personal photographic style.
This competition was hosted by CAPA and we obtained the assistance of three recognized and independent judges from the Photographic Society of America.
Great news. CAPA has won this inter-photographic society competition for the 5th consecutive year in a row.

For this competition, a total of 855 images were submitted and scored by three senior CAPA judges. Many amazing images highlighted the outstanding beauty of our country.
The following table outlines the distribution of images received in each of the two categories (Club & Individual) of this competition and the thirteen themes (provinces/territories):
For both categories, the final reports have been approved and a copy has been forwarded to each entrant.
Shortly after these reports were approved, a copies were also posted onto the CAPA website. These reports can be viewed by first logging onto the CAPA website and selecting the Competition Reports option from the Competition’s dropdown menu.

Based on the judge’s scores from the 2019 Canada: My Country Competition, the top 3 images from each province and territory have been selected for the Salon Mon Pays – My Country. Within the next few weeks, the respective photographer for each of these images will be contacted to arrange for them to submit their original file to allow the preparation of the file for printing.
These selected images will be professionally printed and be put on exhibition at the National Museum of Photography / Musée National de la Photographie in Drummondville Quebec between 7th January 2020 to 29th March 2020.

The Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival has announced the full program for the 23rd edition of the Toronto-wide event spanning the month of May, including its core programming of 23 primary exhibitions and 15 public installations.
Influential American artist Carrie Mae Weems will headline this year’s festival with an exhibition in five parts sited at distinct locations across the city, representing her first solo exhibition in Canada.
In addition to Weems, a selection of outstanding North American and international photographic artists will present an array of projects in museums, galleries and public spaces across Toronto.
“The range of artists that we have gathered for this year’s edition of CONTACT truly span the globe and bring insights and observations on so many different cultural, political and environmental issues,” CONTACT executive director Darcy Killeen says.
“The entire CONTACT team is honoured to have such a diversity of talent on view in Toronto this May and we thank our many partners and supporters for making all of this possible.”
Beyond its core exhibitions, CONTACT includes featured and open call exhibitions that present a range of works by artists at leading galleries and alternative spaces across the city.
CONTACT also organizes and co-presents a wide range of programs, including a book fair, book dummy reviews, lectures, panels and workshops appealing to a wide audience.

It is very satisfying to note the increased number of Québec zone Individual and Club members participating in CAPA competitions. It is also encouraging to see their talent recognized by several awards in the 2019 CAPA competitions.

Alain is a member of the Club photo Évasion and the CAPA the Quebec Zone Director. The award is in recognition for photographic achievement and for the services to the Canadian Association for Photographic Art.

Please join us on Tuesday April 30th for a viewing of this year’s best audio video shows from both the CAPA Individual and CAPA Club competitions as selected and presented by Lance Gitter.
The CAPA audio visual competition submissions can consist of a multimedia presentation composed of photography, video, animation, music and commentary or a combination thereof.
The emphasis of the presentation will be the blending of these components into a cohesive storyline. The transition between the images should flow harmoniously with the appropriate colour or tone complementing the selected theme and images.
CAPA Individual members and members of CAPA member clubs are welcome to attend.
Our meeting takes place in the Banquet Room at the Edithvale Community Centre, 131 Finch Avenue West, North York (1 kilometer west of Yonge).

Gareth Jones (Toronto Camera Club’s CAPA Coordinator) presenting Ann Alimi with a Fellowship Honour (FCAPA). This award was presented to Ann for her many years of supporting CAPA and promoting photography in southwestern Ontario as well as being an accomplished photographer.
We are approaching the closing date (April 30, 2019) for our 2019 Canada: My Country/2020 Canadian Salon competition with the 13 themes (10 provinces and 3 territories).
Our survey of the submitted images indicates that we have very few images for Prince Edward Island, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
If you have not yet submitted any images into this competition, I would encourage you to consider submitting your best images from:
Members can submit images of any province or territory in Canada.
As noted in our competition page, the top three images from each province and territory will be mounted and put on display in the Canadian National Photographic Museum in Drummondville, Quebec. In addition, the top three images in each province/territory theme will receive a CAPA Merit Award.

« My photography journey began when my sister bought me a small point and shoot Olympus camera for Christmas over 30 years ago. I have always loved photography and I always had my camera with me. Sometimes I would get a lucky shot… Finally about 7 years ago I decided I wanted to learn more about photography, and made a decision to start taking night classes and began investing in new camera gear. I started to take my photography a lot more seriously and worked hard at it. « Mon voyage en photographie a débuté quand ma sœur m’a donné pour Noël il y a plus de 30 ans un petit appareil photo Olympus de type ‘’Point and Shoot ‘’. J’ai toujours aimé la photographie et j’ai toujours eu mon appareil photo avec moi. Parfois, j’ai un coup de chance lors de la prise de vue… Enfin, il y a 7 ans, j’ai décidé que je voulais en connaitre plus sur la photographie, et a pris la décision de de prendre des cours du soir et a commencé à investir dans de nouveaux équipements photographiques. J’ai commencé à prendre ma photographie beaucoup plus sérieusement et ai travaillé dur pour m’améliorer. La photographie est vraiment une passion pour moi et je me sens très chanceux d’avoir rencontré des gens qui m’ont inspiré et m’ont encouragé à faire ce que j’aime… »

This year, participants in the 2019 Canada: My Country competition benefit from an added potential bonus due to CAPA’s collaboration with the Musée national de la photographie and the organization of the Salon 2020 My Country which will take place in early 2020 in Drummondville Québec. All participants’ photographs submitted to the 2019 Canada: My Country competition, whether they be selected or not for honours in the competition by CAPA judges, will be eligible to be chosen as one of the 39 photographs that will be printed and displayed from January till the end of March 2020 at the Drummondville event.
The deadline for entering the 2019 Canada: My Country competition is 30 April, after which CAPA judges will select the winners in both the club and individual categories. In a second phase of judging, thirty nine (39) photographs will be chosen amongst all submitted photos, three from each Canadian province and territory for the Salon 2020 My Country event. It is worth noting, as well, that the top 75 scored images from the 2019 Canada: My Country competition will be included in the selection process for CAPA’s submission to the international Four Nations competition.
It’s like getting three competitions for the price of one! Don’t let the 30 April deadline slip past without submitting your best photographic work to CAPA.
