The Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) will host its annual Coast-to-Coast Photo Walk on Saturday, September 19, 2026. The nationwide initiative invites professional photographers, hobbyists, and smartphone enthusiasts to step outside simultaneously and capture the people, landscapes, and unique character of their local communities. Building on last year’s turnout, which brought together more than 400 participants across 50+ local groups, the 2026 edition aims to be CAPA’s largest community event to date. “This event is about celebrating community, creativity, and the power of visual storytelling,” said Suneel Mistry, Director of Marketing at CAPA. “You don’t need high-end professional equipment to participate. Whether you carry a full-frame camera or just the phone in your pocket, everyone is welcome to walk, connect, and view Canada through a fresh lens.” How Communities Can Get Involved: The walk is free for all attendees; participants can locate a walk near them, connect with local photography lovers, and take part in a post-event national photo competition. Scott Simons joined the Niagara Falls Camera Club (now the Niagara Association of Photographic Art (NAPA)) in 1983 and became a member of the Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) in 2023. Since that time, he has demonstrated sustained excellence, commitment, and leadership within the photographic community. Scott has been an active and accomplished competitor in CAPA competitions, consistently supporting the organization through both participation and performance. Beyond his competitive involvement, Scott has made outstanding contributions through volunteer service and leadership. He has served as President of NAPA from 2020 to 2026, guiding the club with dedication and vision. Over the years, he has also held numerous key positions, including Program Chair, Workshop and Outings Chair, Print Competition Chair, and Slide Committee Chair. His long-standing commitment to the broader photographic community is further demonstrated by his service as Canadian Treasurer for the Niagara Frontier Regional Camera Clubs (NFRCC) from 1993 to 2000 and again from 2018 to 2024. In January 2026, Scott joined the CAPA Education Committee, where he continues to contribute his experience and insight to the advancement of photographic education at the national level. Scott’s service has been widely recognized. He will receive a Life Membership Award from NAPA in April 2026. He is a two-time recipient of the George Butt Award for Outstanding Service (1986 and 2016), an honour named after the club’s founder. Jean Hamilton: Passionate about her photographic community What does it mean to truly make a difference in a photographic community? For Jean Hamilton, it meant far more than taking photographs. A longtime member of the Cowichan Valley Camera Club on Vancouver Island, Jean became deeply involved in the club and the wider photographic community after joining in 2011. Over the years, she moved from learning the craft herself to helping others discover their own abilities, while taking on a remarkable range of responsibilities within her club and CAPA. Those who knew Jean remember a person who combined a quiet determination with a generous spirit, a sharp sense of humour and an ability to bring people together. Her contributions extended well beyond her own photography, touching the lives of fellow photographers throughout British Columbia and beyond. Jean died in November 2025 following a long battle with cancer. Her commitment to photography never wavered, however, and her generosity continues through a significant bequest to CAPA. Her story is ultimately about much more than photography. It is about community, friendship, service and the lasting impact one person can have by simply being willing to help others. Jason Duncan joined the North Shore Photographic Society in 2007 and became a member of the Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) in 2010. Since that time, he has demonstrated sustained excellence, commitment, and leadership within the photographic community. Jason became President of the North Shore Photographic Society in 2010 and served in that role until 2017. His leadership extended nationally when he served as CAPA Pacific Zone Director for the 2024–2025 season. He subsequently stepped down from that position to assume the role of Vice President of CAPA. During the 2024–2025 season, he also served as Chair of the BC/Yukon Inter-Club Speaker Series. Jason achieved competitive success early in his CAPA involvement, earning a Gold Medal in the 2013 CAPA Nature Competition. After a brief hiatus from competition, he returned in the 2024–2025 season with renewed distinction, receiving multiple Merit Awards and Honourable Mentions for his submitted images. He was also selected to represent Canada in the Four Nations Competition in 2015, 2016, and 2017 — a significant honour recognizing his photographic excellence on the international stage. Beyond competition, Jason has made meaningful educational contributions to the photographic community. He has presented workshops to several clubs on “Mastering Seascape Photography” and delivered a CAPA presentation on Backup Strategies, sharing valuable technical knowledge with fellow photographers. Jason is also an active judge for several clubs and leads a Special Interest Group on Drone Photography, where he provides guidance on rules, techniques, and technical considerations specific to drone imagery. My term as the Director of Education is ending and it has been an amazing experience. It has been a tremendously rewarding experience to interact with CAPA clubs and individual members across the country. The success and growth of the Education portfolio have been a direct result of the excellent volunteers who came forward to create the Education Committee. I want to personally thank each member who worked with me over the last 2.5 years. Bill Hall, Manfred Mueller, Tracy Elliott and David Laronde were the original members of the committee. Each one brought extensive experience forward to help generate ideas for judging, improving photographic skills and finding inspirational speakers for the CAPA Speaker Series. Bev Anne Moynham, Laszlo Podor, Scott Simons and Lyle Wetsch added more depth to the committee with support for article writing, inspiring speakers, and even more content ideas to share with CAPA. Lyle’s help with the Speaker Series and other technological tools has opened many creative doors to create and share content with CAPA.  The committee has big plans for 2026/2027. The critique nights will restart in September, and we hope they continue to grow in popularity. The Speaker series has been set, and we are very excited to welcome talented and recognized photographers such as Michael Tardioli, Sharon Tenenbaum and Alan Dyer to the fall schedule.  The 2026 Canadian Photography Conference will be a significant event this summer and I look forward to meeting with the CAPA executive team and individual members to share

Since that time, she has demonstrated sustained excellence, commitment, and leadership within the photographic community. Kathryn has been an active and accomplished competitor in both CAPA competitions and the Spider Awards. Her work has been selected for the Four Nations Competition, and she has had an image chosen to represent Team Canada in the World Photographic Cup. In March 2023, she was awarded a Gold Medal as the winner of the North Shore Challenge, a significant competitive achievement. Beyond her competitive success, Kathryn has made outstanding contributions through volunteer service and leadership. She has served as Co-Chair of the BC/Yukon Inter-Club Competition since its inception in 2020, helping to establish and grow what has become a highly successful and inclusive series available to all photographic clubs across British Columbia and the Yukon. She also served as Chair of the North Shore Challenge, a CAPA-sanctioned competition, from 2021 through 2025, playing a key role in its continued success. In addition, she has served as Treasurer for the Speaker Series for five years, providing consistent and reliable stewardship. Kathryn was selected as Master of Ceremonies for the CAPA Conference held in Kelowna in 2024 and served as Co-Chair for registration for the conference, contributing significantly to the planning and delivery of a successful national event. Canada completed a successful run at the World Photographic Cup at the awards ceremony on April 25 in Reykhavik, Iceland, finishing in sixth place and picking up a Gold and a Bronze medal along the way. Order of Canada photographer Michelle Valberg capture a Gold medal in the Nature Wildlife category while Geoff Gabriel of Toronto capature a Bronze in the Reportage-Photojournalism category.  The seven of Team Canada’s images who finished in the top ten were: GOLD / Best of Nation Award – Michelle Valberg, Ottawa ON – Nature Wildlife  BRONZE – Geoff Gabriel, Toronto ON – Reportage/Photojournalism  6th Place – Andrew Hiorth, Vaughan ON – Wedding Open  7th Place – Andrew Hiorth, Vaughan ON – Portrait Natural  8th Place – Madi Rabih, Laval QC – Wedding Open  9th Place – Jacquie Matechuk, Cochrane AB – Nature Wildlife (CAPA member)  10th Place – Manpreet Sokhi, Burnaby BC – Portrait Illustrative (CAPA member) The World Photographic Cup is a prestigious, Olympic-style event that celebrates the art of photography on a global stage. Judging Program Basic Training for New Judges Calgary – July 17 & 18, 2026 This Special In-Person Session takes place at the end of the 2026 Canadian Photography Conference in Calgary. This course is now open to anyone in the Calgary area; you do not need to be a conference attendee to register. Join us for this two-day, instructor-led edition of Basic Training for New Judges. To make this training more accessible, CAPA has developed an online refresher course available through the CAPA Learning Centre. The course is available in both English and French. The course will be phased in beginning this month, starting with judges whose most recent refresher training was completed more than four years ago. If you are a CAPA Certified Judge, no action is required at this time. We are pleased to announce a one-time scholarship donated by the North Shore Photographic Society in memory of Terry Beaupre. The $500 scholarship is for a post secondary student pursuing a degree or diploma for photography from a recognized Canadian post secondary school. About Terry Beaupre by Kathryn McGarvey: My name is Kathryn McGarvey and I am a past President of the North Shore Photographic Society. (NSPS).  I am very honoured to have been asked specifically by Terry to say a few words here today. I knew Terry in her capacity as a fellow photographer and member of NSPS but more importantly as the one person who agreed to take over the Presidency after I stepped down as President. I had asked 13 people to become President and Terry was the only one who said maybe. Fortunately I was able to convert that maybe into a yes. I will be forever grateful to her for stepping up to become NSPS President when nobody else would. Terry was passionate about photography and even earned her diploma in Photography from Langara College. Her photography covered many genres but it seemed her favourite type of photography was nature especially birds. I have so much respect for nature photographers as their subjects don’t sit still for them. Terry’s photographs always brightened our shows. Terry was a long-time member of NSPS, joining the club in 2007. Terry was very active in the club and submitted images in all three categories, projection, colour and monochrome prints.

Bill Hall joined the Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) prior to May 2009 and has since built an impressive record of service and achievement spanning many years. Throughout his tenure, Bill has contributed to CAPA in numerous leadership and volunteer roles. He served as CAPA District Representative for Southern Ontario for thirteen years, demonstrating long-standing commitment and dedication. In May 2023, he joined the CAPA Board of Education Committee, where he quickly became a highly valued and contributing member. In August 2024, Bill was elected Director of Judging, a role in which he made a significant and lasting impact. He expanded, formalized, and published the CAPA Judging Standards Policy, providing clarity and consistency across the organization. Continuing this work, in 2025 Bill authored and published the CAPA Judges’ Reference Manual for use by all active CAPA judges. Between 2024 and 2025, he led a team of CAPA members with expertise in judging and adult education to develop and deliver a new CAPA Judging Course. The Introduction to Judging course was launched in November 2025 and has been met with widespread success. While Bill has not participated extensively as a competitor in CAPA competitions, his contributions as an educator and judge are exceptional. Since 2002, he has delivered more than sixty-four presentations on a wide range of photographic topics and has led numerous workshops. Since 2010, he has judged a total of seventy-two competitions, contributing significantly to the development and maintenance of judging excellence within CAPA. Congratulations to Bill Hall,
