Cancellation Judging Course – Club Photo Impression, March 21, 2020

The Government of Quebec recommends the cancellation, as of March 12, 2020 and for a period of 30 days, of all indoor gatherings that are not necessary. In addition, the City of Montreal has announced the closure of many buildings throughout the city. The St-Michel Community Recreation Building is closed until further notice. Although the risk posed by COVID-19 remains low, we must ensure the safety of our members of the photographic community.

CAPA, for reasons beyond its control directly arising from the latest COVID-19 pandemic guidelines in progress, must cancel the French CAPA Judging Course scheduled for March 21, 2020, hosted by the Club l Photo Impression of Montreal. CAPA intends to reschedule this course later. We will notify you as soon as more information becomes available and the conditions will allow this course to be held.

We apologize for this setback and look forward to seeing you soon. All registrations will be honored for the rescheduled course or you may request a refund. Please note that any refund requests should be addressed to Alain Dubeau at Quebec@capacanada.ca so they can be processed in a timely manner.

Pacific Zone District Rep Carol Jackson

Carol Jackson
District Rep. Carol Jackson – Lower Mainland, Pacific Zone

Carol is our newest District Representative for the Lower Mainland in the Pacific Zone.

Carol’s interest in photography began in the early 1980’s, when she bought her first camera, a Nikon, after graduating from Nursing. Photography took a backseat to family and career until 2010 when she was forced to take a long hiatus from work due to a severe car accident. Enter a new Nikon camera, photography lessons and membership in the Surrey Photography Club. Carol is now the Field trip and Membership Coordinator for the club. She’s also a member of the Langley Camera Club and Bridge lake Club in BC’s Cariboo.

Carol loves landscape and macro in particular and also has a growing interest in IPhoneography.

Outside photography, she owns two dogs, participates in dog training and enters them into competitions.

Pacific Zone District Rep Tanner Sussi

Tanner Susi
District Rep. Tanner Sussi – Lower Mainland, Pacific Zone

Tanner Sussi is our newest District Representative for the Lower Mainland in the Pacific Zone.

Tanner’s photographic career ideas were put on hold for 20 years while her career with the government of Canada kept her busy. During this time she was very active, enjoying everything the outdoors offered. In 2014 she took early retirement due to an injury and was still able to enjoy walking. Slowing to this pace, Tanner noticed many beautiful things and bought a digital camera to capture them. Now her walks were even more interesting and she returned to her original interest in photography that had spawned earlier.

Tanner joined a Facebook group in order to learn digital processing. Her progress with all things digital surged leading her to join the Surrey and Langley Photography clubs, where she began to participate in competitions and displaying prints in art galleries.

In 2018 Tanner took the CAPA judging course and has recently completed the requirements to become a Certified CAPA judge.

Pacific Zone District Rep Janet Slater

Janet Slater is an avid photographer, who is continually working to improve and challenge herself to capture colour and composition that reflects both beauty and a vignette of thought and emotion.

Janet’s photography journey began in 2013 with the gift of her first DSLR. With little background in photography but a lifetime of interest in creating beauty through her numerous craft hobbies, she took courses in both pre and post production to learn the technical aspects of photography so that she could properly focus her artistic inspiration. She joined the Langley Camera Club in 2014 and used the monthly photo challenges as a vehicle to get feedback on how to improve both her  technique and composition. Janet also volunteered her time to the club, assisting in various positions.  She later became a member of CAPA and her photo submissions have won numerous awards and a colour printer. Her passion for photography covers many genres including long exposure, architecture, b+w, still life, infrared and landscape. Janet uses her technical skills in post-processing and a keen eye for timing and composition to focus her artistic inspiration while constantly evolving through experimentation and researching different styles.

In 2018, Janet relocated to the Sunshine Coast (Sechelt) and became a member of the Sunshine Coast Camera Club, quickly becoming part of the executive. In Sept, 2018 she took on the role of the CAPA District Representative for the Sunshine Coast district. She is enjoying promoting the objectives of CAPA on the Sunshine Coast by encouraging the growth of photography and providing CAPA assistance to its affiliated Sunshine Coast  Camera Club.   In Sept 2021 Janet took over the role as the President for the Sunshine Coast Camera Club.  As well, Janet continues to be an active member of the Langley Camera Club

To enhance her interest in photography, Kayla is an active member in both the Clear Focus Camera Club and the Langley Camera Club. On many occasions, she has volunteered to make presentations to share her experience and knowledge to many.

Mary Lore

Mary Shankel Lore

March 28, 1921 – August 18, 2019

Mary Lore, a CAPA Lifetime member who was passionate about photography and saw many changes, including the introduction of colour film, passed away in August at the age of 98. Born in Brooks, Alta., in 1921, Lore first took photographs with her mother’s eight-exposure film box camera.

In her autobiography, written in 2004 at the request of the Foothills Camera Club in Calgary, Lore said it took her nine years to save $99 to buy a Konica 35mm camera in 1949, from there advancing to a second-hand Exacta and then to a new Leica SLR. Lore joined the Calgary Colour Photo Club in 1949 and filled several executive positions, including president from 1984 to 1989. She was a zone representative for the National Association of Photographic Art (NAPA) before becoming president in 1979-1980. She was awarded an honorary CAPA life membership during the 1980s. Lore said she was fortunate to be able to travel to many countries, but still found the foothills and mountains “on our backdoor step” to be her favourite.

Mary grew up on a ranch at Latham, Alberta where her love of wildflowers, birds and animals began and continued as a lifelong passion. For many years she hiked, snowshoed, and rode horses. Mary’s first career was as a clerk and secretary where she showed her talents and rose to be an executive secretary in the exploration department of Shell Oil. Mary became a business education teacher for 20 years, starting at James Fowler High, then John Diefenbaker High and ending her career as head of the business education department at Crescent Heights High School. She was a recipient of the Charles deTro award for contributions to teaching by a classroom teacher. Mary was involved with many organizations, including Desk and Derrick, Skyline Hikers and Trail Riders, the Calgary Field Naturalists, and the Foothills Camera Club. She enjoyed the arts and for many years attended ballet and opera productions. Mary traveled extensively, taking photographs as she went. She was an award winning photographer and her slide shows were legendary.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law, 17 nephews and nieces and 25 great-nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters-in-law.

Steve Donnelly
Steve Donnelly receives an Olympus TG-6 waterproof

On behalf of CAPA, Gerry Alger (District Rep_ made a presentation on Thursday, March 5th to London Camera Club member Steve Donnelly. Steve was the third place winner in the ‘My Country/Mon pays Exposition/Exhibition’ conducted by the Musée National de la Photographie Desjardins in January. I presented Steve with an Olympus TG-6 waterproof camera.

On behalf of Steve please extend thanks to the Musée, to Olympus and, of course to CAPA. Steve felt most honoured.

More from Gerry’s presentation:

“Canada My Country” is the title of one of CAPA’s photo competitions each spring. The most recent was last April.
Like several other London Camera Club members, Steve Donnelly holds an individual membership in CAPA. As such, Steve is eligible to participate in CAPA’s Individual Competitions. (Which, by the way, he does on a regular basis.)

Here were the results of the Apr. 30th competition. In last May’s awards presentation Steve received CAPA’s Silver Medal for this portfolio. The gold medal winner had a total score of 110.5. Steve’s score was just ½ point back. 167 Individual members from across Canada entered into this competition and submitted 638 images. 638 is an important number to keep in mind.

The Musée National de la Photographie Desjardins is located in Drummondville Quebec. (It is the only Photographic museum of its kind in Canada.) The museum has several photo exhibitions every year where large photos are exhibited in the gallery. The current exhibit, entitled “My Country/ Mon pays” is co-sponsored by the museum, by CAPA and by Olympus cameras. This show is currently running. It opened Jan. 20th and closes the end of March.

CAPA judges were to submit 39 of the best images from 638 judged in last April’s competition. There were to be three images from each province and three from each territory in Canada. These 39 images were printed 16X24, mounted, then displayed in the salon gallery.

Steve’s two Manitoba images (polar bear and inukshuk) were chosen to represent Manitoba. The best 3 of the 39 images in the show were selected by a panel of 3 judges – the managing director of the Musée, the head of Olympus North America Sales and Rod Trider as CAPA President. Olympus generously donated cameras to the top three images makers.

Steve Donnelly’s image titled “Polar Bear Churchill” was the third-place finisher overall. Steve wins an Olympus Tough TG-6 Waterproof camera.

Originally from the UK and a resident of BC, Canada since 2007, heavily influenced by the beautiful environment that surrounds her. A background in fine art and anthropology. This combined with the love of the natural world brings a unique perspective to her photography: Her ethos is to tread lightly; observe and search out the subtle visual story within whichever photographic genre she is working. Her work covers the fields of landscape, portrait, wedding, event, promotion, editorial, stock and photography education; allowing her to stay creative and excited about the projects undertaken.

Proud to be a Nikon Canada Ambassador and Lowepro Global Ambassador.
