Bio and Portfolio – Pacific Zone New Mid-Island DR

Nancy Matheson, Pacific Zone Director, is pleased to announce the appointment of Kim Yanick as District Representative, Mid-Island Region, CAPA Pacific Zone.

Kim’s obsession with the camera started back in the early ’90s at Sheridan College. It was a wild time to be in school—film was still king, but digital cameras were just starting to peek over the horizon. After graduating, Kim spent five years in Vaughan, Ontario, working as a medical photographer for a cosmetic hospital. It was a job that required total precision, which she balanced out by capturing the high-energy, emotional chaos of weddings.

In 1999, Kim headed west to British Columbia, taking a bit of a breather from the professional photography world. It wasn’t until 2005, when she picked up her first digital camera, that everything clicked back into place. She dove headfirst into Photoshop and never really came back up for air. She fell in love with the “digital darkroom,” getting lost in the world of composites and magical fantasy art where the only limit was her imagination.

While Kim loves exploring every corner of photography, she’s always had a bit of a soft spot for the fine art side of things. Her signature look is a painterly, soft-focus style that she applies to everything from portraits to florals. She loves creating images that don’t just look like a moment in time, but feel like a painting you could step right into.

For Kim, the best part of photography is the community. She’s a big believer in using the camera as an excuse to get outside, live a little deeper, and express the things words can’t quite catch. She loves to engage with other photographers and inspire people to just try something—to play, to experiment, and to see where the creative process takes them.

These days, Kim is focusing her lens on some new adventures. She’s currently diving into the world of pet photography, capturing the unique personalities of our four-legged friends. She’s also expanding her toolkit to include dynamic outdoor portraits, using off-camera strobes to blend her signature “magical” look with the bold energy of the natural BC landscape. Whether she’s building a whimsical fantasy world or chasing a dog through a field, Kim is always looking for that next spark of inspiration.
