CAPA Welcomes New Club in Nova Scotia

By: Tom Gallant, DR, Eastern Nova Scotia

The Scotsburn-Northumberland Amateur Photography Society (SNAPS) has become the first club in Eastern Nova Scotia to join CAPA. SNAPS has been in existence since 2012. SNAPS was started by two newcomers to the area, Dave and Christine Hache, both photographers; Dave coming from New Brunswick and Christine from Truro, Nova Scotia. The club started in Scotsburn, the home of Scotsburn Milk and Ice Cream, with just over 10 members. There are presently 30 registered members and 750 listed as members of their Facebook page. The members come from a wide variety of professional backgrounds, including: doctors, nurses, educators, business people and many others from the two-dozen communities in Pictou County. The majority of the membership of the club resides in New Glasgow and Pictou, with the population of Pictou County approximating 55,000 people.

SNAPS represents a group of photographers who are more than willing to give of their time to help all members regardless of their skill level. There is a very low cost for membership. The rate is $10.00 per year, and $2.00 per meeting, which happens the first Wednesday of each month, at the Northumberland Regional High School in Alma, a small community in Pictou County. The low membership fee was put in place to attract everybody who has a desire to learn or improve their photography.

Tatamagouche Bridge by Tom Gallant
Taken at Tatamagouche , a community 30 minutes from Pictou, N.S.

At regular monthly meetings, members can showcase their work, through digital presentations, partake in workshops given by outside presenters and inside from skilled club photographers. As well, the club members have the opportunity to get together as a group on field-trips to photograph the beautiful scenery of Nova Scotia (see attached samples). These field trips happen on a monthly basis. At least once per year, the club has an exhibition in one of the County venues, where any member can showcase their work to the public. In addition, one of the senior club members, Dr. Gerry Farrell, has given up space at the Aberdeen Hospital’s “Art on the Wall,” where he has traditionally showcased his work, to SNAPS members where they can showcase and sell their own work. Part of the proceeds of sales goes to the hospital foundation. The remainder goes to the artists. As a gesture of community spirit, some members of the club volunteer, in order to enhance their photographic profile, and cover events of non-profit community organizations. Their photos are given to these organizations to be used for publicity. All of the activities that SNAPS undertakes is done in a relaxed fun way, with no pressure.

Becoming a CAPA member will allow club members to compete at a regional and national level, have their work adjudicated by professional and certified judges, and to become a certified judge themselves, if they choose to do so, and be involved in regional and national seminars, and workshops.

You can obtain more information about SNAPS on Facebook at: SNAPS (Scotsburn-Northumberland Amateur Photography Society).

Isabelle Levesque

Atlantic Zone District Representative

Native of Saint-Quentin, a small town in northwest of New Brunswick, I now live in the greater Moncton area since 1991.

I always love art and it brought me to get a degree in visual art at the Université de Moncton and a Design and Multimédia productions Diploma from CCNB.

I practice macrophotography, from which my first two exhibits were born, « Givre en bulles » et « Papillusion ». I am also passionate with wildlife and more recently I extend my horizons to landscape photography.

I am a member of CAPA since 2011, and became the District Representative (DR) for Moncton area in 2017. My role is mostly to meet with Francophone communities in New Brunswick to introduce CAPA and recruit new members. Also I am a member of the executive for the 2021 CCC in Moncton.

I live in St. John’s, NL, and a member of Camera 35.

I have always enjoyed photographing landscapes under the night sky or during blue hour. However, I find that wildlife has really captured my imagination over the past couple years. I am sure a part of that is because Newfoundland has the largest gathering of humpback whales every summer.

I have been an individual and club member with CAPA now for over 5 years and it is great to be a part of an association that showcases the best places in our country. Only through sharing images, can we broaden our horizons to what the rest of the country has to offer.

I have been a member of the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia since 1996. I have been the Halifax District CAPA Representative since 2009 and the CAPA club representative for the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia since 2007.

I was a member of the CAPA Nomination Committee in 2008-2009 and 2010-2011. Also I was part of the organizing committee for the two day Camera Conference (ACC) in the Atlantic Zone in 2016 and a member of the 2016-2017 CAPA Website Development Committee.

I enjoy meeting photographers from across Canada and being inspired by their work. I like to challenge myself to capture and convey what I see no matter what the subject but I love to photograph macro subjects and nature.

Atlantic Zone District Representative

I am a member of the Scotsburn Northumberland Amateur Photographic Society (S.N.A.P.S.) from Pictou County, Nova Scotia. I moved here four years ago from Manitoba after I retired as an administrator of a K to 12 school. While in Manitoba, I, along with a local doctor, started a Photography club there, and when I arrived here, I introduced SNAPS to CAPA. Then took the Judging Course in Moncton in 2018. Great course!

Throughout my long photographic career, I photographed weddings, took portraits and shot modelling portfolios. Over the past 20 years, I’ve photographed mainly landscapes, seascapes, mostly in NL with Icebergs and the amazing cliffs, and wildlife.

I also edit, print and frame my own work. As well, I love teaching photography. As a result, I’m looking forward to working with the many talented photographers both at CAPA and SNAPS. Because of the wealth of talent with CAPA and here in Nova Scotia, I am learning all the time, and being a life-long learner, this is ideal. A win, win for me!

The Gabriola Photography Club has been in existence for over 12 years and meets at the Rollo Senior Centre from 10 am-noon, the first and 3rd Wednesday’s of every month (excluding July and August). At the meetings both members and guests present various photographic related topics with outsiders welcome to attend. Photos related to the topic are displayed and details discussed. Our latest presentation given by Sharron Palmer-Hunt, was on whales and dolphins, including how they are negatively impacted by the environment, with special emphasis given to our endangered southern Orca population.

Members also share photo taking outings with other local photo club members and have a pub social gathering once per month. Twice a year the Club puts on an exhibition at the Rollo Senior Centre. Our next exhibition is on Sunday November 17th from 10am-4pm. Everyone welcome.

Throughout the year we have individual members displaying their work downstairs at the Gabriola Medical Centre, at 695 Church Street. Diane Green is currently displaying photographs until October 15th followed by Steve Struthers until November 18th. Our photographs are also often displayed in other local establishments on the island and at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo.

Sharron Palmer-Hunt has recently been chosen as the district CAPA representative for 3 island clubs in the Pacific region, including Gabriola, Harbour City and Cowichan Valley. We are looking forward to getting together with district group members and sharing fun ideas.

The updated criteria will be as follows with the changes shown in red:

  1. All submitted images will be pre-screened by the Director prior to the ‘day-of-judging.’ If deficiencies are detected then the entrant will advised and encouraged to make the necessary changes prior to the ‘day-of-judging’ – if possible.
  2. Image title should complement or contribute to the vision or message being presented in the image.
  3. Judges will award their scoring based on key elements such as: compliance with Scope of Competition, composition, technique and subject matter. However, the judges will have a strong emphasis on the creative message, quality of execution, innovation, appropriateness to this competition, and ‘wow’ factor.
  4. For Nature/Wildlife Competition – the story-telling value of a Nature image and the depiction of the natural environment must be weighted more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical quality.
  5. Judge may disqualify an image if it does not meet the Scope of Competition provided the majority of judges are in agreement.
