FIAP World Cup for Clubs Competition

For the first time in many years a Canadian club, the Chinese Photographic Club of Toronto, has entered the FIAP World Cup for Clubs competition (FWCC). The FWCC is a yearly international event for photographic clubs. In this competition each club submits 20 images with a maximum of 2 images per author. These images are scored by a panel of international judges. In the most recent competition 224 clubs from 48 countries entered a total of 4,385 images.

The Chinese Photographic Club of Toronto, the sole Canadian entry, placed 3rd in this prestigious competition. In addition, Francis King was awarded the top individual award, while Katie Mak tied for the second individual award, giving the Chinese Photographic Club of Toronto two of the top three individual awards in this competition.

CAPA takes this opportunity to congratulate all of the authors who submitted images with the Chinese Photographic Club of Toronto for their success in this competition.

The overall results for the clubs that entered, and the photos of the winning club can be found on the FIAP website.

Richmond Photo Club Society Oct23. Update

On Saturday, September 23rd, from 12 noon to 4 PM the Richmond Photo Club Society participated in Richmond’s Culture Days. This is an event running from September 23 to October 15, 2023. Over these three weeks, dozens of Richmond artists and arts organizations will offer free, inspiring interactive events and behind the scenes access to a wide range of art forms and creative practices.

The Richmond Photo Club Societies contribution to this event was to provide high quality portraits to the visiting public. We did this in a studio-like setting in the Cultural Centre, upstairs near the roof-top garden. Families, children and singles were all invited to have their portraits taken. We are providing up to five high quality images (suitable for prints up to 8″ X 10″) free to all visitors!

Richmond Photo Club Society members that volunteered their time that day were:

Chuck Vaugeois
Grant McMillan
Corina Lynn
Joseph Eng
Gerry Boretta
Eva Sylvanna Wong
Julian Rozental

We had 30 eager visitors show up that day to have their portraits taken! Thank you to our volunteers for offering their time and making this event a great success!

We look forward to participating in more events of this type to promote interest, participation and improvement in photography in our city and the surrounding areas.

Artificial Intelligence Generative text-to-images

To stay abreast of the rapidly changing AI generative technology, we’ve established an AI Advisory Committee to the Director of Competitions. The committee comprises of Dr. Bob Ito, Parez Khatib, and Robert Hulbert.

In response to recent advancements in AI generative capabilities, we have revised our CAPA Eligibility Criteria webpage to incorporate the following statement:

  • Images that have been created or modified using specific AI generative techniques – inpainting (where AI fills in generated elements not captured by the photographer) or outpainting (where the AI extends beyond the original boundaries using generated elements), whether with or without text prompts, are not permitted for submission into a CAPA competitions.

This statement has also been added to all our 2023 – 2024 competition narratives.

Prior to entering any competition, we strongly encourage you to carefully review the other components of the CAPA Eligibility Criteria webpage concerning artificial intelligence and the definition of a photographic image. You can access the complete CAPA Eligibility Criteria by clicking here.

We have developed an informative presentation on Artificial Intelligence to enlighten our photographers about this swiftly changing evolving technology.

Camera clubs interested in hosting this presentation via Zoom can contact the Director of Competitions.
