Abandoned Photo Tours with Bobby Scott

The Prairie Zone hosted two tours in partnership with Abandoned Photo Tours and Bobby Scott.

The attendees of the tours were treated to the full spectrum of Alberta weather with very warm and dry conditions in Medicine Hat followed by bitter cold conditions in High River.

The Medicine Hat tour – Cold Steel, explored a very large collection of old vehicles which included trucks, tractors, busses, and cars. All in various states of restoration and decomposition. The evening session toured an old homestead perched in a hill. The sunset was excellent. The attendees were then able to light paint the home and outbuildings during the blue hour for interesting night shots. CAPA President Henry Schnell made the trip out to attend the event and was captured here resting on a vintage Honda.

The second tour in High River “All Hallow’s Eve” visited two abandoned locations. Bobby Scott was able to provide detail on the history of the homes and the eccentric owners. Attendees were free to explore the buildings without fear as the locations had been rigorously scouted prior to the outing. The wintery backdrop of the last location was light painted with light stands and drones to add visual interest to the prairie scene and the Holmes Homestead.

The Prairie Region Zone Director, Dan Sigouin, is hoping to bring other exciting opportunities and events to CAPA members in the future. If you have suggestions or ideas, please contact Dan @ prairie@capacanada.ca

April 2022 Prairie Zone News

The Prairie Zone has been very fortunate to have supportive clubs such as the Calgary Camera Club, Foothills Camera Club, Images Alberta CC, Image West Photographic Association, Regina Photo Club, Saskatoon Camera Club submit images to the yearly CAPA competitions. The CAPA clubs and individual members of the Prairie Zone consistently won awards during the 2021 competition season and I am very impressed with the development of talent across the Zone. 2022 looks to be another great year for the Zone and I am very excited to be part of the dynamic region. Thank you for your hard work and effort during the pandemic and look forward to seeing more fantastic images in the future.

November 2021 Prairie Zone News

November 2021 Prairie Zone News

The Image West Photographic Association had spent much of the 2020-2021 year meeting via Zoom.

We enjoyed a BBQ in June for our wind-up meeting and set a couple of club outing dates for those that were able to attend.
In July, we enjoyed the Redcoat Trail, which included stops at Scotsguard, Eastend, stopping for a picnic at the Pine Cree campsite, and then off to Chimney Coulee to inadvertently crash a wedding. Also, we made our way to Jones Peak, which was very picturesque.
In August, the club members travelled northwest to the Great Sandhills near Scepter.

We have been getting together in small walking groups and totally enjoying learning and sharing ideas with each other. We have been very fortunate to resume “live” meetings at the local Art Gallery (of course with restrictions). That was truly amazing.
Another small tour was arranged to photograph a small car/truck collection. It was referred to by the club member as her uncle’s Field of Dreams as he is now 94. The tour was amazing and appreciated by membership.

The club is looking forward to the 2021-2022

Vernon Photography Club’s Outings

Vernon Photography Club's Outings

Outings have always been a very popular activity for the Vernon Photography Club (VPC). When COVID-19 struck we were a disappointed group but we made do with individual outing challenges (pick a theme and members found their own shooting locations) and Zoom slide shows. With the lifting of some of the Provincial Health restrictions and the ability to now hold in-person outings, the Outings Committee worked hard to provide members with a wonderful assortment of outings through the summer and into the fall.
In early July, members met in the Village at Silver Star Mountain and enjoyed a scenic gondola ride to the top of the mountain. After days of smoky skies from the BC wildfires, we had a reprieve with some clear vistas and we enjoyed a very pleasant hike down the mountain trails and back to the Village. The wildflowers and butterflies were great and we enjoyed watching the brave jumps of the downhill bikers.

We are fortunate to have an energetic and knowledgeable Outings Committee who work around the challenges of weather, locations and health restrictions.

It was a hardy bunch of photographers who braved rain and sleet to photograph the two remote small lakes, Dee and Island in mid September. Shivering, they struck out in kayaks and small craft to capture loons and a lovely assortment of lily pads, all in a moody and grey setting.

Images of the Milky Way have always had a special fascination for photographers and this certainly holds true for the VPC. These night sessions are always popular although they are often difficult to schedule as clear skies are required. The night before Halloween, a group of 16 photographers gathered in the dark at Kekuli Bay, along beautiful Kalamalka Lake. While the ambient light from Vernon and Kelowna made capturing great images of the Milky Way a challenge, it was delightful to get out with this group and work on our night photography skills.

Capturing various light sources is always a lot of fun and members gathered on an October evening to explore their creativity. Starting with night cityscape images of Vernon, the group then photographed vehicle light trails along the highway before setting up on a local beach. Here a variety of light sources were used – LED light stick, glow sticks and burning steel wool in a whisk. It was a fun evening, with an umbrella, the only casualty!

In mid August Club members gathered at Craigellachie, the site of the Last Spike, before heading on to the 3 Valley Gap Ghost Town. After being closed on account of being on evacuation alert for several weeks, finally, this historic and photogenic tourist attraction had opened. Before heading home, the group stopped to check out and capture Crazy Creek Falls and Malakwa Suspension Bridge.

The North Okanagan is fortunate to have an organization, The Allan Brooks Nature Centre (ABNC), that promotes the enjoyment of nature and the awareness of habitat conservation. In late August the ABNC sponsored a Raptor show that brought in several species of raptors for demonstration and viewing. Members of the VPC were able to capture some great images of the majestic birds.

What a pleasant morning was spent at the Sparrow Grass Field & Flower Farm near Armstrong on a glorious day in early August, wandering along the rows of colourful flowers. The sunflowers were at their peak just brimming with cheer inviting the photographers to capture their beauty. The multitude of honey bees and butterflies were a special bonus.

PDF Final Reports | Rapports finaux PDF

PDF Final Reports Will No Longer Be Sent To Entrants Via An Email

As of September 1, 2021, a copy of the final competition reports will no longer be sent out to participating entrants.

The decision is based on the following problems and issues:

– our internet provider limits the recipients in a single email message to 50 to 60.  Therefore, we have to send out multiple email messages for each competition.

– our competition@capacanada.ca and my email addresses have been flagged by some internet services as a bulk spam message.

– individuals are tighten up their computer’s firewall to protect themselves against spammers and hacker.  Consequently, our bulk email messages are being blocked.

– individual or clubs have changed their email address and have not updated their CAPA account

The final report continues to be posted on our website.

The final competition report can ONLY be viewed after you have successfully logged into our website.  Once logged in, you will select the Competition Reports option from the Competitions dropdown menu. By doing so, the report will be presented to you.

To save the report to your computer, you will need to select the File/Save As PDF option on your internet browser and select the folder where the report should be saved to.

APAC is collaborating with The Fraser Valley Conservancy (FVC) in exploring the topic of climate change in the Fraser Valley.

At our Program Night on March 21st the coordinator of The FVC’s new Close to Home program Laura Brodey spoke to APAC about climate change and the FVC. We did a breakout brainstorming session on photography and its role and had a first look at some of the images being collected so far.

As photographers, our great observational skills are important for this, along with our ability to communicate these realities in ways that touch people’s hearts and minds.

Members have already contributed over 150 relevant images into the galleries and we will continue to do so as we explore new ways to partner with the FVC in the near future.

38th Annual North Shore Photographic Challenge

38th Annual North Shore Photographic Challenge
Hosted by the North Shore Photographic Society
Proudly presented by: BEAU PHOTO

On March 5, 2022, the North Shore Photographic Society will host the 38th Annual North Shore Photographic Challenge, an exciting evening designed to showcase the highest levels of all genres of the photographic arts. Everyone is welcome to this spectacular evening which will be hosted again this year on Zoom. The Keynote Presentation starts at 4:30 pm (Pacific) and the Show starts at 7:00 pm (Pacific).

As the premier photographic competition in Western Canada, the Challenge welcomes entries from individual photographers and clubs from BC and the Yukon. The Challenge is open theme: Subjects can include rare wildlife action, breathtaking landscapes, street, architecture, the human form, altered reality and abstracts. This is an outstanding opportunity for photographers to showcase their work, meet other photographers (virtually), learn from vendors about the latest tools and techniques, and compete with the best on Challenge night – March 5, 2022. Winners will be recognized with CAPA medals.

Attendees of Challenge 2022 will be thoroughly entertained by a keynote presentation and Q&A… this year by award-winning photographers, Connor Stefanison and Jess Findlay.

We, at NSPS, are confident we can deliver another captivating virtual experience, as in 2021. Holding the Challenge online removes traditional physical barriers thereby allowing photographers from across the Province and Territory and show-goers from across Canada to participate fully. We welcome back all those who have taken part in prior years’ Challenges either as competitors or audience members, and extend a special welcome to those for whom this will be a first time experience. Everyone who enjoys creative photography will take away something including, if you’re lucky, the raffle prize, 50/50 draw and/or one of many great door prizes from our generous sponsors.
