Abbotsford Photo Arts Club

Outstanding news and congratulations goes to our own Anita Teljeur for her image entitled, “Illuminatis” that took the coveted “Best In Show” award and a CAPA Gold Medal!!

Also congratulations to Gerry Hiebert who won a Bronze 3rd Place Medal in the individual submissions for his image entitled, “Holiday Warmth”.

APAC is collaborating with The Fraser Valley Conservancy (FVC) in exploring the topic of climate change in the Fraser Valley.

At our Program Night on March 21st the coordinator of The FVC’s new Close to Home program Laura Brodey spoke to APAC about climate change and the FVC. We did a breakout brainstorming session on photography and its role and had a first look at some of the images being collected so far.

As photographers,our great observational skills are important for this, along with our ability to communicate these realities in ways that touch people’s hearts and minds.

Members have already contributed over 150 relevant images into the galleries and we will continue to do so as we explore new ways to partner with the FVC in the near future.

Jonathan Ward receives CAPA Honour

Jonathan Ward, FCAPA 

Lance Gitter presenting the FCAPA Honour to Jonathan Ward of the Toronto Digital Photography Club. 

Jon’s involvement with photography and CAPA has a long history. He’s been a club president, a CAPA District Representative, and currently serves on the Board of Directors as the CAPA Secretary. Jon’s images have received top awards in CAPA, national and international competitions. He has presented travelogues of his many photographic adventures to several clubs in the Greater Toronto areas, and his artistry has been featured in numerous exhibits. 

Jon is a Certified CAPA Judge and is often called upon to judge in both local and national competitions. His amazing images can be enjoyed at www.jonwardphotography.com.

Lorna Scott receives CAPA Honour

Lorna Scott, of the Langley Camera Club, is presented the FCAPA Fellowship Honour by Carla Hamilton, CAPA Pacific Zone District Representative.  

Lorna has long and extensive involvements in the Langley Camera Club where she currently serves as president. She has also served as the treasurer for the Pacific Zone and has recently been appointed to a position on the CAPA Board of Directors as Treasurer. 

Lorna’s artistry has won many awards in club, CAPA and other competitions. Her work has been published in a number of magazines, such as; Canadian Camera, PhotoLife, Gilded Magazine, and others.

Carla Hamilton receives CAPA Honour

Carla Hamilton, of the Langley Camera Club, is presented the ACAPA Fellowship Honour by Thomas Keigher, LCC Awards Coordinator. This Honour is presented in recognition of photographic achievement and service to CAPA. Carla’s amazing images have been accepted into many club, CAPA, and other competitions, where they have earned numerous awards. Her excellent work has been published in magazines, such as; La Cheval Canadian, Gaitpost, and other media. 

Carla is involved in many community activities, such as; the Official Photographer for the Aldergrove Fair, Breakfast with Santa, Mayor’s Winter Wonderland Gala, etc. Carla also serves as a CAPA Pacific Zone District Representative.

Latest news from the FIAP

FIAP, the International Federation of Photographic Art, was established almost 80 years ago to connect national photographic associations. Currently 92 national associations represent their countries as members of FIAP. CAPA is Canada’s national representative in FIAP.  

 

Each year FIAP presents artistic awards to photographers in each of its member countries. These distinctions recognize a photographers’ success in international photographic salons. Six CAPA members received FIAP Distinctions this year.

38th Annual North Shore Photographic Challenge

38th Annual North Shore Photographic Challenge

On March 5, 2022, the North Shore Photographic Society will host the 38th Annual North Shore Photographic Challenge, an exciting evening designed to showcase the highest levels of all genres of the photographic arts. Everyone is welcome to this spectacular evening which will be hosted again this year on Zoom. The Keynote Presentation starts at 4:30 pm (Pacific) and the Show starts at 7:00 pm (Pacific).

As the premier photographic competition in Western Canada, the Challenge welcomes entries from individual photographers and clubs from BC and the Yukon. The Challenge is open theme: Subjects can include rare wildlife action, breathtaking landscapes, street, architecture, the human form, altered reality and abstracts. This is an outstanding opportunity for photographers to showcase their work, meet other photographers (virtually), learn from vendors about the latest tools and techniques, and compete with the best on Challenge night – March 5, 2022. Winners will be recognized with CAPA medals.

Attendees of Challenge 2022 will be thoroughly entertained by a keynote presentation and Q&A… this year by award-winning photographers, Connor Stefanison and Jess Findlay.

We, at NSPS, are confident we can deliver another captivating virtual experience, as in 2021. Holding the Challenge online removes traditional physical barriers thereby allowing photographers from across the Province and Territory and show-goers from across Canada to participate fully. We welcome back all those who have taken part in prior years’ Challenges either as competitors or audience members, and extend a special welcome to those for whom this will be a first time experience. Everyone who enjoys creative photography will take away something including, if you’re lucky, the raffle prize, 50/50 draw and/or one of many great door prizes from our generous sponsors.

BC/Yukon Inter-Club Speaker Series

After a successful, initial BC/Yukon Inter-Club Speaker Series last year,  a new virtual Speaker Series has been organized for this year.  The 2021-2022 Speaker Series features four accomplished and inspiring photographers and runs from November 19, 2021 to April 8, 2022. A total of 33 photography clubs representing over 1,500 photographers from across BC and the Yukon  (including 5 new clubs this year) are supporting this exciting undertaking with CAPA, Pacific Zone providing a financial contribution as well.

The BC/Yukon Inter-Club Speaker Series was created in October 2020 through a collaborative effort of photography clubs around BC and the Yukon.  It fosters connection between hundreds of photographers and provides rich learning experiences via presentations from famous and recognized photographers. Individual members from participating clubs can register for free for all four speakers.

We are thrilled with all four of our acclaimed speakers this year.

Michelle Valberg will be our kick-off speaker on Friday, November 19th with her presentation, “Creating Emotional Impact with Wildlife Photography”. This presentation will be moderated by North Shore Photographic Society.

Guy Tal on Friday, January 14, 2022 will be presenting “Creativity and Expression in Photography”. This presentation will be moderated by Central Okanagan Photographic Society.

George Kourounis on Friday, February 25, 2022 will be presenting “Documenting Earth’s Extremes: Getting the Shot and Staying Alive”. This presentation will be moderated by Prince George Photographic Society.

The final presentation in the Series will be An Evening with Joe McNally on Friday, April 8, 2022, which will be moderated by the Langley Camera Club.

Prior to our first speaker, a “Connections” night on November 5th, 2021 is being held to foster camaraderie amongst club members by meeting fellow photographers in small groups in breakout rooms.

Anyone from BC and the Yukon interested in attending the Speakers Series presentations should consider joining a participating photography club to be able to access these 4 incredible speakers.

For 16 of the past 18 years, we have held Photomotion at the Inlet Theatre in Port Moody. Unfortunately, like last year, due to Covid 19, it is not practical for us to use the theatre. We are therefore bringing you Photomotion in a virtual format again this year.

Photomotion is the main financial event of the year for our club. Last year we presented Photomotion free of charge as our way of saying thank you for the support many of you have given us over the years. Cold Steel, an Abandoned Photo Tour

The Prairie Zone, along with Robert Scott, offers Cold Steel, an Abandoned Photo Tour.

Cold Steel will take place in Medicine Hat on Saturday, October 16 from 11 am* until 10pm. 

After a slideshow presentation, participants will be heading to see rows and rows of classic old vehicles for the afternoon. After the afternoon of photographing vintage vehicles, the group will leave for the night photography portion of the tour which will be located at the Beuhring House.  The group will photographing the house for moon rise, sunset, nautical twilight and civil twilight. Robert Scott offers a unique approach to photographing abandoned homes. He will light the interior, making the home feel alive with a soft glow.  Robert follows this up by lighting the house exterior by way of a drone. The idea is to capture the entire imagine with one photograph. Samples of his work can be viewed online at abandonedphototours.ca.

This workshop will adhere to Covid restrictions. Participants will shoot six feet apart. The currently scheduled 11 am  presentation may be moved to a Zoom presentation depending on what’s happening with the latest restrictions. For more information or to register :

News from Saskatoon Camera Club

Hans Holtkamp, a long-time member of the Saskatoon Camera Club as well as the wider Saskatoon art community through his work as a sculptor, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2021. While he had many artistic talents, Hans will also be remembered as a gentle soul and a cheerful friend to everyone. He was deeply knowledgeable on many subjects, and freely gave of that store to help others. His presence will be missed at the camera club.

Saskatchewan Amateur Photo Competition

The Regina Photo Club held another successful competition for Saskatchewan amateur
photographers. The SaskAm Competition has been running since 1980 to help
showcase the great photographers of the province and encourage new ones.

All entrants must be residents of Saskatchewan and have amateur photography status.
This year entries were down from the usual 500+ to just over 370, for a variety of
reasons. Rosettes and cash prizes were awarded in 9 categories. All the winners can
be seen on the SaskAm website: saskam.ca. Or if you’re in Regina, prints can be seen
at Don’s Photo on Dewdney Avenue.

Thanks to all the CAPA judges and judges in training who adjudicated this years
competition.

High River Workshop

The Prairie Zone, along with Robert Scott, offers All Hallow’s Eve, an Abandoned Photo Tour. All Hallow’s Eve will take place near High River on Saturday, October 30 from 3 pm until approximately 9:30 pm. 

Depending on current Covid regulations, there may be a Zoom meeting the day before the event.  

At 3:00, we will meet at a TO BE ANNOUNCED location. We will meet at this predetermined location and go over the tour, sign waivers as well as our creative plan for each location. Robert Scott will discuss how we will be setting up for the Night Photography portion of the tour. 

3:45pm – Ferguson Homestead.  We’ll spend some time exploring this quaint old house where the widower James Ferguson homesteaded. There is a unique barn outback that usually is home to a couple of owls.

5:00pm – Frankburg House – Robert Scott is still in the process of researching this grand home. Apparently, it was built by a man for his wife who had written him a letter to tell him that she was leaving him. He lived in the home briefly before moving away. It has remained vacant ever since. The house is a perfect location for us to practice our night photography skills.  

The group will be photographing the houses for moon rise, sunset, nautical twilight and civil twilight. Robert Scott offers a unique approach to photographing abandoned homes. Campfire with the Calgary Camera Club

On September 18, members of the Calgary Camera Club, Foothills Camera Club and a few individual CAPA members met at North Glenmore Park to enjoy a small campfire and catch up with local photographers in the area.

The weather was perfect for the small gathering. The attendance to the gathering was small as the provincial government released another round of Covid safety measures and restrictions that impacted the turnout.

The focus of the meet and greet was to announce two new activities in the prairies with Abandoned Photo Tours as well as discuss the opportunity of a judging course in Calgary.

It was a fun evening to catch up with photographic friends and enjoy the many cultures of Calgary that use the city parks.

My Country – My Pays Exhibit

C Space King Edward is open Monday through Friday from 8 am until 8 pm and Saturday from 8 am until 5 pm.

A reception will take place on Friday February 4th, 2022 at 6 pm. 

The Canadian Association for Photographic Art will proudly exhibit the work from individual and club winners and honourable mentions. These images identify our unique Canadian identity, including cultural heritage, geographical uniqueness, historical events or locations, iconic landscape or cityscape, roughness of Canadian landscape, seasonal uniqueness, nature, wildlife specific to Canada, architecture and images that show symbols of caring, confidence, courage, encouraging, helping others, nurturing, pride, respect, self-sacrifice and trust. 

Images include aircraft, animal, architecture, landscape, cityscape, objects, plants, sea mammals, trains, vehicles, vessels and each of Canada’s provinces and territories will be represented. These images exemplify the unique beauty of one or more themes from the perspective of either a resident or a visitor.

We are seeking volunteers to join our Competitions Team: 

  • Graphical artist who can assist us in updating and re-designing our current CAPA e-certificate template 

 

  • 2 to 3 volunteers to assist with the transposing photographer’s name, title of image and copy of image onto our e-certificates templates.  Individuals should have some experience using layers in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements 

 

  • An individual who has experience using the EntryWizard application and who would be interested in assisting with the setting up competitions as well as ‘re-consider-original-score’ process and ‘tie-breaking.’  Documentation is available which outlines how the EntryWizard application has been configured for our purposes.

CAPA Club Services Award 2021

Due to Covid 19 our club continues to meet online, however we were able to hold one field trip  outdoors. In September, during the Macro field trip at the gardens of Maria and Laszlo Podor, the CAPA Club Services awards for 2021 were presented to Darryl Robertson and Laszlo Podor for their many years of dedicated service to PGNS and the critical role they played in last year’s transition to a program entirely online. 

 

A Member of the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia since 2007, Laszlo Podor has served as statistician from 2008-2011, vice-president from 2009-2011, president in 2011-2015, and is currently serving his third term (2020-2022) as President. During 2020-2021, he worked tirelessly to ensure a seamless transition to the online platform. In addition to setting up all the online WebEx meetings, he meets with each presenter to ensure their presentation will run smoothly and has setup the Eventbrite registrations for the meetings.  

 

Darryl Robertson joined the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia in 2011. He has been the Guild’s Webmaster since 2013. In the summer of 2019, he completely revamped the competition portion of the website to deal with the latest WordPress updates which had rendered the coding for the online competition uploads obsolete. During 2020-2021, due to the necessity to moving the Guild’s Program and Competition Judging completely online his workload has more than tripled and he was an integral part of making the 2020-2021 season a success.
