New Westminster Photography Club News

In September, the New Westminster Photography Club started its 2022/23 Program Season. It is a year of change with 70% of the leads for the Executive changing.

Our season opening meeting included an overview of planned activities and an introduction of the new Executive. The meeting also included Members Sharing of photography highlights from the summer.

The Club participated in the popular Fraser River Riverfest activities. Our club had a tent on the New Westminster Quay. Our tent included an exhibition as well as an assortment of photographs matted and under a sleeve. A success as photographs were shown to the public and some artists sold their photographs.

The club had created a new lead role for Exhibitions and our lead Anna Camporese took on the exhibition and sale as her first community event. Well done, Anna! There was a high level of interest from the community. We were exhibiting our work and in turn this initiated the public to show their photography on their cell phones. We are happy with all discussions of photography. As result of our involvement in the festival, our local newspaper ran an article on the Club.

The club also has increased its presence on social media channels. Two roles now lead our communications through Facebook (New Westminster Photography Club) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/new_west_photo_club/).

Our photography outings are popular and have included Vancouver’s False Creek Olympic Village and Granville Island. Not only is the outing fun for those who attend, the experience is expanded with members posting photographs to the Club’s Outings Gallery as well as our Social Media channels.

We have a full schedule of meetings that include those in a ZOOM format where we have out-of-area speakers and in-person meetings.

Richmond Photo Club News

We would like to thank our outgoing president, Neil leNobel for his leadership. During his tenure Neil provided sincere photographic encouragement, direction, and knowledge. His wisdom was delivered with humour, humility and honesty. His chairmanship of the Competitions Committee for many years and his continued assistance with this committee was exemplary. We are extremely grateful for his governance and are honored that he will be staying on in an advisory role as his time permits.

We are very pleased to introduce our new President, Julian Rozental. Julian brings with him a wealth of photographic & management experience. His leadership capability is already evidenced by the number of events RPC is currently moving forward on. Examples of these are noted below.

In September, volunteer members of the Richmond Photo Club contributed pictorial content to the London Farm Family Day, providing a large number of expert family portraits in a suitably set-dressed old barn and smithy. They also documented a number of various vendors, a rabbit farm, a Lego club, and a host of activities. There were rabbit-petting, spoon and egg races, horse-back riding for children, and a hot jazz band, for the amusement and edification of adults and children alike. Finally, our members gifted the photographic results to the City of Richmond for archival and promotional use.

A subsequent similar event entitled Richmond Culture Days, part of the Canada-wide Culture Days, was also served by volunteer members of the club. Here, free family photos were taken and will be e-mailed to thirty-three participants. Again, an illustration of how the Richmond Photo Club is an active and appreciated participant in local community events.

Some very exciting news is that The Richmond Museum is currently hosting an exhibit entitled “The Arts Live Here”. The event runs from September 24, 2022 for 11 months. The event highlights how the arts speak to us, connect to us and give us unique ways to understand ourselves, our communities and our city.

We are honored to have had the Richmond Museum reach out to us to request permission from a number of our club members to use their images in this event. The Museum discovered these images by perusing our club’s website, proving how valuable online exposure is to the club. Those members who images were choses are:

Urs Fricker – Traditional Taiwanese Dancers / Polish Festival
Albert Tsai – Purple Orchid / Red Tulip / Flying Butterfly
Hendy Wu – Look Forward On Stage
Eva Sylvanna Wong – A Longing Gaze

The exhibition hours are:

9am-9pm weekdays
10am-5pm weekends
Closed on statutory holidays

We have also included the artist’s images to this article.

During the month of October, a group of Richmond Club photo prints are on exhibit at the South Arm Community Centre in Richmond, BC. The emphasis is on scenes and events native and peculiar to the City of Richmond. This is an event that may be repeated several times throughout the coming year(s). This event provides an opportunity to display images from the Richmond Photo Club further promoting the art of photography at a local community level.

Looking forward, the largest upcoming event for the Richmond Photo Club will be the Lansdowne Photographic Show. This event will be held in Lansdowne Mall, Richmond, BC February 9 – 12, 2023. This public exhibit will showcase 96+ photos from Richmond Photo Club’s members. More on this event will follow as the date nears.

Winter2022 issue of Canadian Camera magazine

The Winter issue of Canadian Camera Magazine will feature articles on creating memorable images and interpreting images as well as CAPA competition results, club news and Meet the Volunteers.

All individual CAPA members are encouraged to submit their ideas and articles to editor-in-chief Ralph Bridgland for future editions of Canadian Camera. We are especially urging those with expertise in all genres of photography to share their knowledge with our readers. Such how-to articles need not be lengthy and can be accompanied by photos that help illustrate the procedures.

The content deadline for the Winter issue is Oct. 10, Jan. 10 for the 2023 Spring issue and April 10 for the Summer edition.

Membership Fee Increase

In April 2022, the CAPA Board approved the first increase in membership fees since 2013. The fees have been the same for almost ten years.

During that time, more benefits were added to CAPA membership, including the new Speaker Series, the monthly newsletter, enhanced and more accessible website, and social media pages for members to engage in the photographic community. CAPA continues to offer a wide variety of competitions exclusively for CAPA members and clubs, at no charge.

At the same time, costs have increased in all areas, but especially for printing and distributing the much-loved Canadian Camera Magazine. Even with all that is offered to members today, CAPA still remains entirely volunteer-run with no outside funding. Your volunteers work very hard to bring you the best membership experience CAPA can offer.

You are getting this notice now so that there is some time before the increase takes effect. Members who renew before January 1, 2023, even members who renew early, will have an additional full year of membership at the old rate. This is a one-time opportunity to get your membership renewed early at the old rate before the clock strikes midnight on December 31st.

Here are the new rates as of January 1, 2023:

  • Individual Memberships: $75
  • Family Memberships: $95
  • International Memberships: $60
  • International US Memberships: $85
  • Youth Memberships: $30
  • Libraries, Schools & Associations: $50
  • Small, Medium & Large Clubs: no increase ($65, $100 & $130)

The Sunshine Coast Camera Club 2022 Fall News

The Sunshine Coast Camera Club in BC is excited to announce their new president, Evan Brynne for 2022-23. Although his interest in cinematography and lighting go back to his childhood running around the backstage of various theatres, he only translated that into a mild obsession with the practice of photography about eight years ago, when he was gifted an a6000 for Christmas. Initially most of his projects were motivated by requests to support friends in the performing arts before branching out to other collaborations, which has helped him develop a deep rooted passion for portraiture and for the collaborative process of working with other photographers and models.

For the past three years the Sunshine Coast Camera Club has provided Evan (and many others) with exceptional opportunities for developing and challenging his photography skills, a forum to showcase and critique his work, and a community where he found friends and collaborators. In taking on stewardship of the group, Evan hopes to continue to provide the same for the members, as well as the many folks on the coast who the club will be connecting with over the course of the year.

Cheers,

Evan

CAPA Scholarship Winner 2022 – Tracey Farrington

Thank you so much. I will make you all proud.”

I plan to use the scholarship for the purpose of going to the University of
Gloucestershire (UK) to complete my Bachelors of Art in Fine Art. I will be attending in
September 2022 and graduating in June 2023. The monies would be used towards the
significant costs of tuition due to currency conversion and as an international student.

With an extensive background in photography, I have been an advocate and ally pushing the
boundaries of fine art within the photographic community. My position is that it belongs. I
continue to assist this evolving process. I am an agent of change within the evolving digital art
realm. Yet, I am teaching the historical photographic processes to the youth who have not
experienced film or other processes like cyanotype or wet plate. I think it is important for all to
understand where photography has come from as it evolves.

I will briefly touch on highlights of my CV (www.tjfarrington.com). I hold three fellowships
(F/CAPA, F/PPOC-BC, F/SWPP). I was the first female to represent Canada as the International
Photographic Judge for the World Cup. I have judged photographic exhibitions in UK, USA, and
Canada. I have taught judging clinics in the UK and Canada with emphasis on art and abstracts.
I have a Masters of Photographic Arts (MPA x4) and a Service in Photographic Arts (SPA)
through Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC). I have been a mentor and portfolio
advisor within the photo and art community and volunteering photographic expertise to
schools and local clubs.

In the UK, I will be exploring various forms of photographic art with access to processes and
equipment unavailable in Canada. I am a conceptual artist, mainly photography-based. I am
looking forward to seeing where and what will develop in the upcoming year abroad.

I am experimenting with hybrid photography. This includes making three-dimensional weaves
of liminal-space photographs during breath practice. This liminal space is captured in the
moment the photograph is taken. The weave of the photographic strips adds a visual
expression of time, ritual and mediative practises within the spiritual paradigm.

The six-image portfolio is eclectic in nature covering a number of years.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the Canadian Photographic Art Association’s conference, commonly known as the CCC 2023.

The theme of the congress “Beyond the image; seeing differently” allows to explore not only the usual universes, but also the more exploded universes by considering astronomy, passing by the underwater universe, the horizons, until the artificial intelligence in photography.

This biennial conference will take place from August 8 to 11, 2023, in Quebec City, QC, more precisely on the campus of Laval University and photo outings will precede the 3-day event on August 5, 6 and 7 as well as after the event for an additional day on August 12. Laval University is reserving a set of rooms for the entire period.

Indeed, in a concrete way, Lorraine Deslauriers, organizer of the event, proposes a range of photo outings in the beautiful region of the national capital and associations with local organizations will allow us to dig into these less known universes.

In the mornings, the program is spread over three days (August 9, 10 and 11) and will offer three unilingual plenary sessions with simultaneous translation. In the afternoon, parallel periods on different topics will feature a conference in French and then in its English version. We need afternoon presenters. These two sessions are 1 ½ hours each (1-2:30pm and 3-4:30PM) including the periods for questions. Should you have a problem to deliver your conference in both languages, please mention it your proposal.

For the choice of our lecturers, we have given ourselves precise selection criteria: the high standard of the quality of the photography, the dynamism of the person to spread his art, the level of knowledge in the innovative subject, the quality of the rendering.

We would therefore like to launch our invitation to submit your proposals for topics such as the exploration of new universes, astronomy, underwater world, horizons and artificial intelligence or your proposal on the more classic subjects of architectural photography, landscape photography, wildlife photography, but without forgetting any presentation feeding on the photographic technique such as the black and white, the ” High Dynamic Range “, the long exposure, the fast exposure, the ” Low-Key “, the ” High-Key “, the ” Light Painting “, the macro photography, etc.

The commitment, in submitting a conference proposal, includes the submission of the title and abstract of the presentation, ideally with inherent photos, a short biography, a photo of the speaker and the requirements for his/her participation.

CCC2023 News

The Quebec Zone is turning its attention towards the next edition of the CCC which will take place at the beginning of August 2023 in Québec City (https://www.CCC2023.com).

Since COVID forced the cancellation of the previous CCC planned for Moncton in 2021, this next conference will signal the return of a much awaited event after an absence of four years. A briefing was held last 20 January with the directors of the Québec zone clubs. Several subjects were discussed relating to the CCC 2023.

To insure the success of this event of national importance, several volunteers will be required. At the present time, two bilingual candidates are being sought to coordinate communications and registrations. If you feel up to the challenge and are available to contribute some of your free time, send a short message with some details to
