The Magazine

Canadian Photography magazine is published four times per year and is approximately 40 pages in length. Over 1,400 issues are distributed through the membership of 1,200 individual members, and 100 plus member photography clubs. The magazine features high quality photography and articles written by CAPA members. Each issue usually highlights a CAPA photographer, volunteer, and photography clubs, and includes news and competition winners.

The Position

The Editor in Chief is a paid hourly contract position with the Canadian Association for Photographic Art. This is a remote work from home position. The Editor reports to the Publishing Editor.

The Editor manages the development of each issue of the magazine, including gathering the content, editing the articles, choosing the images, working with the graphic designer, and advertising manager. The Editor is also responsible for mailing lists.

The Requirements

The candidate should have a strong educational background in in communications, a BA in English, journalism, or equivalent experience. This position requires strong writing and grammar skills. Experience in copy editing is highly desirable. Some knowledge of French would be helpful.

A basic familiarity with the publishing process is an asset. The candidate will be responsible for the process of turning draft text into an article, choosing the photos, and coordinating with the graphic artist to create a final layout.

The applicant must have a good understanding of photography and its processes.

The successful candidate will be experienced with basic computer operations and be comfortable with MS Word and Office. A high-speed Internet connection is required.

Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and a strong sense of responsibility are essential. As well, good interpersonal and communication skills are a must.

A significant part of the job is to gather content. The Editor reaches out to CAPA members, by phone and email, asking them to share their knowledge and photography through articles they write.  Often these people require encouragement and support. Tact, patience, and a sense of humour are essential.
