Oceanside Photography Society – April 2026 – News

The Oceanside Photography Society on Vancouver Island recently held an exhibition of their members’ work, ‘A Celebration Of Photography’, at The McMillan Arts Centre in Parksville, from late November 2025 to mid-January 2026.  Shown above are Bob Christopher, Society President, and Liz Mackay, the Exhibition Coordinator.

A large variety of subjects, mediums and sizes were on display in the Art Centre’s main Concert Gallery.  A total of ninety-five art pieces were contributed by twenty-four OPS members, and then skillfully arranged by the McMillan Arts Centre’s Hanging Committee.  An additional display using electronic media was featured in an adjacent gallery, with dozens of OPS members’ favourite photographic images showing in rotation on multiple screens.

The exhibition received many compliments from visitors, and its presence in such a prestigious and respected gallery provided excellent exposure for our Society, giving us the opportunity to attract many new members.  Many thanks to all who contributed their talents, resources and time to put on this impressive display.

Bio and Portfolio – Pacific Zone New Mid-Island DR

Nancy Matheson, Pacific Zone Director, is pleased to announce the appointment of Kim Yanick as District Representative, Mid-Island Region, CAPA Pacific Zone.

Kim’s obsession with the camera started back in the early ’90s at Sheridan College. It was a wild time to be in school—film was still king, but digital cameras were just starting to peek over the horizon. After graduating, Kim spent five years in Vaughan, Ontario, working as a medical photographer for a cosmetic hospital. It was a job that required total precision, which she balanced out by capturing the high-energy, emotional chaos of weddings.

In 1999, Kim headed west to British Columbia, taking a bit of a breather from the professional photography world. It wasn’t until 2005, when she picked up her first digital camera, that everything clicked back into place. She dove headfirst into Photoshop and never really came back up for air. She fell in love with the “digital darkroom,” getting lost in the world of composites and magical fantasy art where the only limit was her imagination.

While Kim loves exploring every corner of photography, she’s always had a bit of a soft spot for the fine art side of things. Her signature look is a painterly, soft-focus style that she applies to everything from portraits to florals. She loves creating images that don’t just look like a moment in time, but feel like a painting you could step right into.

For Kim, the best part of photography is the community. She’s a big believer in using the camera as an excuse to get outside, live a little deeper, and express the things words can’t quite catch. She loves to engage with other photographers and inspire people to just try something—to play, to experiment, and to see where the creative process takes them.

These days, Kim is focusing her lens on some new adventures. She’s currently diving into the world of pet photography, capturing the unique personalities of our four-legged friends. She’s also expanding her toolkit to include dynamic outdoor portraits, using off-camera strobes to blend her signature “magical” look with the bold energy of the natural BC landscape. Whether she’s building a whimsical fantasy world or chasing a dog through a field, Kim is always looking for that next spark of inspiration.

North Shore Photographic Society – Jan. 2026 – Upcoming Event

Save the Date! The North Shore Photographic Society presents the 41st North Shore Challenge on Zoom on Saturday, March 7, 2026, @ 7 pm Pacific.

Interested in discovering stunning photography? Each year, between 250 and 300 talented photographers from BC and Yukon eagerly submit their best work to a special competition called the North Shore Challenge, organized by the North Shore Photographic Society (NSPS). The North Shore Challenge is considered one of Western Canada’s top photographic competitions and has a long, respected history dating back over 40 years.

The North Shore Challenge features two exciting parts: individual submissions and club submissions. This year, a panel of six friendly judges will carefully evaluate all the amazing images in a single judging session. To keep things fair and enjoyable, the highest and lowest scores will be set aside, so each image is scored based on the remaining four scores.

The top-scoring image from each individual, along with club-submitted images, will be showcased on March 7th, 2026. The results will be announced during this exciting, live, online event.

In the first half of the show, you’ll be treated to top images from individual photographers. The results and the Bronze, Silver, and Gold medallists will all be revealed at that time. Following the presentation of the images, a unique portion of the North Shore Challenge will occur. Each of the six judges will comment on the winning and other favorite images, adding a truly personal touch to the experience.

In the second half of the show, all the remarkable club-submitted images will be displayed, and the results and Bronze, Silver, and Gold medallists will be announced. Following the showcase of club-submitted images, each of the six judges will provide comments on the winning and other favourite images.

The event wraps up with the presentation of the North Shore Challenge trophy to the winning photography club and the Best in Show announcement for the top-scoring image (either by an individual or from a club-submitted image).

Submission deadline for images is Sunday, January 18, 2026, @ midnight. All submissions include a ticket to the online Zoom session.

Even if you don’t plan to submit images for the North Shore Challenge, plan on attending the showcase on March 7, 2026. Showcase tickets are available until noon on March 7.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, March 7th, 2026, and join us live for this inspiring celebration of photography. Tickets and details are available on the NSPS website (nsps.ca) under the North Shore Challenge 2026 tab.

North Shore Challenge 40th Anniversary

Distinguishing features of the upcoming North Shore Challenge

The North Shore Photographic Society is delighted to be hosting its unique 40th North Shore Challenge on Zoom on Saturday, March 1st, 2025. Over the years, the North Shore Challenge has evolved into a premiere photographic competition in Western Canada.  Photographic competitions occur around the world. What makes ours unique? Three characteristics do, a combination of club and individual images, two rounds of scoring for individuals and judges’ comments.

The North Shore Challenge started as a club-only competition years ago but has evolved into a competition featuring the best images from clubs and individuals from around BC and the Yukon. This is the first distinguishing characteristic. Prizes are awarded for both individual and club submitted images with one image being chosen best in show. Each individual can put forward three images.  Each club can submit up to six images from six different photographers. The club with the highest scoring images will win the North Shore Challenge trophy.

This brings us to the second distinguishing characteristic, two rounds of scoring for individuals. All individual images are scored by a panel of judges in round 1. Scores from round 1 are shared with the participants. Each individual’s highest-scoring Round 1 image will advance to the second and final round which will be scored by a different panel of judges. Judges meet online to discuss images that have tied scores to determine which one from each participant becomes part of the North Shore Challenge gala show on March 1st, 2025.

By far, the biggest difference from other photographic competitions is a recent addition to the North Shore Challenge, judges’ comments. Each of our judges will be commenting on three different images including all six of the winners. Apart from the six winners, judges get to choose which images they would like to comment on. Sometimes judges all want to comment on the same image but only one judge can.

This new feature of judges’ comments is an incredibly popular hallmark to the North Shore Challenge. Photographers and non-photographers alike truly relish hearing from our panel of distinguished judges about what strikes them about particular images and in some cases how they  can be improved.  Judges may provide their comments live on the actual night of the North Shore Challenge or in a recorded format. If the comments are pre-recorded, sometimes the actual image is brought into a processing software and the suggested changes highlighted that way. Regardless of the format of their delivery, judges’ comments are becoming the most popular portion of our evening.

Competition entries for the 2025 North Shore Challenge open on November 1st, 2024 and will close at midnight PST on January 12, 2025. British Columbia and Yukon individuals and photography clubs are encouraged to consider “taking the Challenge” and submitting images this year. The cost of participation includes free admission to the Zoom session on March 1st, 2025.  Non-competitors from around the world are welcome to attend, for a small fee, the gala show which will begin at 7 pm PST on March 1, 2025.  We invite you to witness for yourself why the North Shore Challenge is a celebration of excellence in photography.

Richmond Photo Club Society – 2024 September Update

Once again, The Richmond Photo Club Society participated in Richmond’s Culture Days. This event in Richmond BC runs from September 20th to October 13th. This year Richmond is hosting over 80 diverse digital and in person events celebrating the diversity and importance of arts and culture in communities across Canada. Richmond, BC is one of the biggest participants in Canada!

The Richmond Photo Clubs contribution this year was to photograph the Community Arts Council of Richmond’s sponsored event, the Camilli String Quartet as they performed at the Steveston Town Square Park, Sunday, September 22nd from 2 to 4 PM. Club members Gerry Boretta and Laurie Lirette graciously provided their expertise to this very well attended event.

Intellectual Property Presentation

The education committee is pleased to announce the following presentation:

“Cameras, Copyright, and Criminals: Legal Concerns in Public Photography”

In this presentation, Halifax lawyers Nolan Little and Thomas Panther provide an overview of copyright law in Canada with special attention to legal issues potentially faced by photographers in public spaces. They will discuss the basic regime for creating copyrighted works, licensing those works to others, and remedies that photographers may use if they believe their photographs have been copied without permission. They will then cover issues specific to public photography, such as copyright infringement, voyeurism, trespass, and invasions of personal privacy. We hope that you’ll gain a better appreciation for your rights to photographs, how they can be used (and cannot be used), and how to avoid causing problems for yourself or others when taking photographs in public spaces.

This presentation is offered online, Wednesday, October 9, 2024, 04:00 pm (Pacific Time)

Please join us on Zoom for this presentation. Access to the Zoom link is provided through the member section of the CAPA website.
