The Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia

Due to Covid restrictions on in-person meetings, presentations were made to the following members in October. Viki Gaul was presented the CAPA Excellence in Photography Medal for receiving the highest cumulative points in CAPA digital competitions throughout the 2021-2022 season.

Edie Greene was honoured with the CAPA Club Services medal for her many years of dedicated service to the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia (PGNS). A member of PGNS since 1976, Edie Greene has been a mainstay at the club. She has looked after Hospitality and Banquets for 17 years before retiring from the position, hosted countless Executive Meetings, as well as International Exhibition judging and often billeted speakers for club events.

As part of the celebrations for the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia’s 75th year as a club, on October 22, the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia had the pleasure of visiting the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS).

Shannon Parker, Laufer Curator of Collections arranged a research visit featuring a selection of prints from the Annie Leibovitz: Photographs from her Books collection held in trust at the AGNS.

It was an educational and inspiring experience for members to be able to view some of the images in the collection.

“Camino de Santiago: A Photo Walk in Spain by Peter Steeper takes place on Sunday, Oct 23, 2022 at 7:30 PM ADT. In May 2022, Peter walked 115 kilometers on the Camino de Santiago with his granddaughter.

This presentation features images from their pilgrimage as well as other parts of Europe. Peter will also provide tips for those planning to walk long distances with their camera gear.

“Antarctica and South America” by Jim Neale takes place on Sunday September 18, 2022 at 7:30 PM ADT. An educator and organizational development consultant (mostly at Dalhousie) prior to retiring, Jim and his wife now travel between November and May every year,backpacking and chasing opportunities that present themselves. For close to a year, Jim and his wife Donna visited some of South America’s many natural wonders including the Galapagos, the Amazon, Torres del Paine, the glaciers of Argentina, and Iguazu Falls.

Frederick Emerson Greene, HonFPSA, GMPSA, EFIAP, HonFCAPA. November 18, 1939 – January 20, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Frederick E. Greene HonFPSA, GMPSA, EFIAP, HonFCAPA on January 20, 2022 at the age of 82.

A titan not only in the seafood industry but also in the photographic community, Fred was an honourary member of the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia.

Awarded numerous honours for his dedication and service to promoting the art and science of photography, Fred organized workshops, fieldtrips, wrote countless articles on photography and was a Past-President of PSA (2007-2011). Fred also was the Program Chair of the highly successful CCC2002, coordinating a program of first-class lectures by 28 internationally known speakers. He was an international exhibition judge and presented to camera clubs in Canada, the US and the UK.

Involved with CAPA since its inception, Fred received his ANAPA in 1996. In 1992, Fred was recognized with the Colour Photographic Association of Canada (CPAC) Services Award at the national level for his work on the board during 1985-1991 and received his HonFCPAC in 1996. In 2007, Fred received an Honourary Fellowship from the Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) for his many years of dedicated service to photography, both as Vice President (East) in CPAC and as the Atlantic Zone Director for CAPA which was formed by the merger of CPAC with the National Association for Photographic Art (NAPA).

Fred E. Greene leaves behind a continuing legacy of ‘promoting art and science of photography’ with his bequest to CAPA. Details yet to be worked out and announced

News from Focus Camera Club – March 2022

Focus Camera Club have what we call an off-week meeting.

 

What is that you must think? Focus Camera Club use to meet every two weeks, but starting a couples of years ago, the club offer an off-week meeting presenting basic educational presentation on photography, editing software, and different knowledge to beginners and to all other club members who wants to participate.

This is really needed, and thanks to Mathieu Chiasson who take care of those plus so much more for our club.

Juneau Icefield Alaska with Paul Illsley

The Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia is pleased to extend an invitation to join us on Sunday October 24, 2021 at 7:30pm ADT for Juneau Icefield Alaska with Paul Illsley 

Join us on a photographic journey across Alaska’s remote and pristine glacier systems. Paul spent eight summers as an instructor of research imaging, remote sensing, and photogrammetry with the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP). Paul’s talk will include images of his adventures as well as views of the beautiful pristine glacial landscape that Alaska is famous for.
