Jean Hamilton Leaves a Generous Bequest

Jean Hamilton: Passionate about her photographic community

What does it mean to truly make a difference in a photographic community? For Jean
Hamilton, it meant far more than taking photographs.

A longtime member of the Cowichan Valley Camera Club on Vancouver Island, Jean became
deeply involved in the club and the wider photographic community after joining in 2011. Over the years, she moved from learning the craft herself to helping others discover their own
abilities, while taking on a remarkable range of responsibilities within her club and CAPA.

Those who knew Jean remember a person who combined a quiet determination with a
generous spirit, a sharp sense of humour and an ability to bring people together. Her
contributions extended well beyond her own photography, touching the lives of fellow
photographers throughout British Columbia and beyond.

Jean died in November 2025 following a long battle with cancer. Her commitment to
photography never wavered, however, and her generosity continues through a significant
bequest to CAPA.

Her story is ultimately about much more than photography. It is about community, friendship,
service and the lasting impact one person can have by simply being willing to help others.

CAPA 2020 AGM – Notice of Change

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the safety of our members, the CAPA AGM scheduled to be held on Saturday, July 18, 2020, 2:00 PM Atlantic Time at The Rodd Hotel, 434 Main Street, Moncton, NB, E1C 1B9 will now be done Virtually.

The AGM will now be held by Zoom Meeting on the same date and time.

All current CAPA Members are welcome to attend by sending their names by email to the Secretary of CAPA who will send a Zoom invitation to each member in the week before the meeting. Members must register no later than 24 hours before the start of the AGM.

News from the Gabriola Photography Club

Gabriola Photography Club on Zoom

The Gabriola Photography Club has continued activities during the COVID-19 outbreak.
We have been out taking photographs close to home.
Our meetings continue on Zoom as do our social pub nights. Our last meeting was about new photography experiences we have had and photographed during Covid.
Sharron Palmer hunt was excited to receive a first place CAPA individual merit award for her image titled “anticipation” receiving a score of 27 in the animal/bird theme of the My Country Contest. Thx to the judges!
Our Capa Pacific Central Island Regional Workshop date has been extended for a year to April 2022 due to Covid and the anticipated backup dates for other workshops and photo salons. Our workshop will take place in Nanaimo, BC so stay tuned, as time flies when you are having fun.

News from the Langley Camera Club

It is difficult being a photography club when we can not do one of our favourite things, getting together! We decided early on that we would find a way to carry on.

First, we ramped up our Facebook postings, hosting some FC photo challenges, we want to ensure that we are keeping our club engaged.
We then adopted using Zoom for our virtual meetings.
We have introduced a series of informal club Locked Down competitions that our members are quite excited about.
We will be hosting speakers in May and June over Zoom.
As well we invested in Visual Pursuits, an online system for photography clubs that allows for online judging. This is going to be a real benefit to our club. We also plan on providing activities over the summer months until we start up again in the fall and we are preparing to do that virtually in case we still can’t meet.

News from the Crescent Beach Photography Club

All CBPC meetings have been cancelled until further notice due to Covid 19.
Of note is the fact that Lynne Kelmann has stepped down from the position of president of the club. Lynne has done an excellent job as president for the past three years, and we are all grateful for her guidance over this time period. Lynne has advised that she will continue to offer assistance during the hand over to the person selected to take over the president’s duties and has volunteered to chair the outings committee going forward.
The remaining members of the club executive committee are in the process of arranging a meeting to plan future club activities and choose a new president. Although none of us can predict the future we do hope to start up club activities again in September providing this can be done safely.
The club currently has 75 members and is in a good financial shape. More details will be sent to our members as the executive committee meets to elect a new president and determine the best way forward.

News from the Surrey Photography Club

The Pandemic has put a damper on most Camera clubs and SPC is no different.
SPC has had only one meeting in March and is starting meetings via Zoom this month.
Some of the members are doing no photography and others are reworking archived images.
One of the executives started a themed weekly challenge on their closed page in which only a few participated.
No face to face meetings are planned until possibly the fall.

CAPA Judges Information

CAPA Judging Program: A complete plan for ensuring a consistent and high judging standard for CAPA sponsored competitions and salons. The program includes, but is not limited to, establishing Judging Standards, recruiting potential judges, developing training materials (in conjunction with the Director of Education), providing training for new judges plus recurrent and remedial training as required, establishing a certification process, ongoing monitoring of judges for quality assurance, and a feedback loop to capture suggestions for improvements to the program. The program is managed under the authority of the Director of the Judging Program.

Enhancing CAPA’s Judging System

CAPA is committed to ensuring the highest judging standards in its international, national, and zone competitions. To assist in maintaining those standards and ongoing improvement to CAPA’s judging system, and responding to members’ related observations in the 2019 national survey, the Board instituted a process to enhance efforts. These include the creation of the Judges’ Liaison Officer position to increase communications with judges, assist judges with questions regarding their roles and responsibilities, and aid in ensuring quality judges for competitions. Amongst measures to ensure judges are up to date with the art and craft of photography today and maintain judging standards, CAPA has created a small team of highly experienced senior judges to monitor the scores and comments over time given by judges in national competitions. CAPA’s policy on the monitoring of its judges is set out in the attached document below.

In addition, as part of initial efforts to improve support to judges, certified and trained, CAPA is:

Updating its national database through a Judges Information questionnaire to all judges, to verify our information is up-to-date and accurate;
Emphasizing the importance when judging on-line that each judge views the same image. CAPA highly recommends on-line judges use a quality, calibrated monitor. Below is a link to a document explaining these recommendations: “CAPA On-Line Judges Technical Viewing Requirements”. All judges are requested to familiarize themselves with these recommendations; and
Amending its judges’ management system. It has updated the “Certification to Become a CAPA Judge” document. This describes the requirements and process for becoming a certified judge, the roles and responsibilities of both certified judges and trained judges, and how to maintain certified status. Below is a link to this updated CAPA document. CAPA recommends each judge familiarize themselves with its contents. In particular please take note of the requirement that certified judges must obtain renewed accreditation every 5 years to ensure they are up to date with the art and craft of photography today and are maintaining CAPA’s judging standards.

The ongoing improvement of CAPA’s judging system is a team effort. This effort encompasses both judges and the Board. We welcome any questions, concerns, and suggestions. This is a part time, paid position. The CAPA web site was designed using WordPress themes. You will work with a great group to provide ongoing member support and to keep the site content current.

C.A.P.A. member, Julie Hay (also a member of the London Camera Club) entered her four-image portfolio into the Nov. 30^th Individual Competition. Julie received a 3^rd Place Merit Award (close-up category) for her image ‘Frog on Flower’ (missed out second place in a tie-breaker). She also received an Honorable Mention Award for her portfolio.

International Salon of Photography Results

Once again, the 126th International Salon of Photography, hosted by CAPA member club Toronto Camera Club, was a great success.

This internationally recognized competition closed on November 12, 2019 and received photos from top photographers in countries around the world including: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Macau, Malaysia, Malta, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States, Vietnam and Wales.

The salon consisted of six sections: Nature, Pictorial Open (Colour), Pictorial Open (Mono), Photojournalism, Print Open (Colour) and Prints Open (Mono). Each section had its own judging panel. There were 227 medals and ribbons awarded.

Atlantic Zone News November 2019

The Atlantic Zone has a new District Representative (DR). The first time we have the DR in Newfoundland and Labrador! Please join us to welcome Michael Winsor for this position. Michael is an amazing photographer. Read Capture of a Lifetime for more on Michael.

Isabelle Levesque received a CAPA Associateship Honour (ACAPA). Isabelle is the DR in Moncton area in New Brunswick, and she had served the CAPA Representative for the Focus Camera Club in Moncton the past 2 years. Congratulations!

Focus Camera Club in NB hosted a presentation by Freeman Patterson as part of its 50^th anniversary celebration. Freeman showed stunning images of Monet Garden in France, Kingsbrae Garden and Shampers Bluff in NB along with his inspiring talk. 225 people attended from Moncton area, Fredericton, and Quispamsis. Congratulations to Focus Camera Club!

Pacific Zone District Rep Dave Snider

Dave Snider has been appointed as new District Representative for the Central Interior District of the Pacific Zone. District Representatives are the face of CAPA in their District and provide connections for the communities they represent throughout the zone and across Canada.

Dave was born in B.C. in 1948 and has spent most of his life in B.C. He has been interested in photography since his early teens but only became really active around 2009. He became a member of the Kamloops Photo Arts Club (KPAC) in 2012 and has filled executive positions from 2013 to 2019. Around 2014 Dave joined CAPA. In 2019 Dave became a CAPA Certified Judge and was appointed CAPA’s Central Interior District Rep. He is also a member of the Kamloops Arts Council.

Dave’s main areas of interest are landscape photography and floral photography. He gives introductory photo courses to the public through the City of Kamloops and offers tutorials. Prints of Dave’s photos can be seen on display predominantly in businesses, government offices, homes and at the Old Courthouse Gallery in Kamloops while others can be seen elsewhere in Canada, the U.S. and the UK.

Married to Doris since 1971 and blessed with two adult daughters, Dave can often be found tramping the hills around Kamloops and area with camera in hand enjoying every minute of his retirement.

Shuswap Photo Arts Club News November 2019

The Shuswap Photo Arts Club will be focusing on Photojournalism this month.

Monday November 11 Program will give and overview of this genre and include a presentation by Cameron Thompson the Salmon Arm Observer Photographer.
Monday November 25 will see special guest, Greg Osadchuk, with an extensive photography career spanning many decades. He is trained in industrial photography, spend time as photographer for THE PROVINCE newspaper and has continued with a passion in landscape photography.

More about Greg Osadchuk

For photographer Greg Osadchuk, picking up a camera for the first time at age nine marked the beginning of a life-long passion that turned into a diverse career, spanning more than 50 years. Following a university arts degree and formal, industrial photographic training Greg launched into an energetic and fulfilling career as a photojournalist for The Province newspaper in Vancouver.

He eventually left the city and settled into the interior of BC where he could pursue his passion of Landscape Photography.

During his time in Nelson, Greg owned and operated his own photography gallery, later returned to university to earn his Bachelor’s degree in Education. He them immersed himself in education where he taught Digital Arts and Photography for 15 years, before retiring to his favourite passion.

Gabriola Photography Club Fall Show and Sale

Things will be humming at the Gabriola Photography Club’s Fall Show and Sale, Sunday November 17, 2019 from 12:00 to 4:00 pm at the Rollo Centre, Gabriola, BC. Admission Free.

Fine Art Competition Awards

Two awards were presented to winners of the Fine Art Competition.

On November 28, 2018, Lynne Kelman (President of the Crescent Beach Photography Club) was presented with the Fine Art ‘Club’ Competition’s Honourable Mention Ribbon by Sheldon Boles – CAPA Director of Competitions. For this competition, the club received the 4th highest score in this competition. The six club members who contributed their images were: Derek Hayes, Lynne Kelman, Mike Strong, Ronald Kelman, Roy Abbot and Wayne Farrow.

On November 28, 2018, Llaesa North was awarded the 2018 Fine Art ‘Individual’ Competition’s Silver Medal by Sheldon Boles – CAPA Director of Competitions. Her four images received a total score of 98.5. Llaesa received her award at the Crescent Beach Photography Club.

Toronto Camera Club Salon a Success

Congratulations to the Toronto Camera Club on the running of their 125th Annual International Salon. With over 6000 images & prints from over 40 countries the salon exemplifies international photography at it’s best.

Lily Markovic and her dedicated team of volunteers should be proud of the work they have done in running this prestigious international salon. CAPA has promoted the salon for many years and was well represented with 7 of the 10 Judges being CAPA members.

We look forward to working with the TCC Salon in the future to help promote the photographic arts.

Sunshine Coast News

The newly formed Sunshine Coast Region for CAPA is located on the beautiful and photogenic West Coast of British Columbia. It consists of a club called the Sunshine Coast Shutterbugz. The club has just started its fifth year of operation and has a small, established core membership on which to build. Phil Cunnington leads this group of near novice to very accomplished and artistic photographers.

The club keeps busy with field trips and outings; themed photo assignments, followed up with review sessions; workshops; guest speakers and presentations by their own members. They have creative ways of getting exposure and increasing their membership, one of which is showing their photography at the local movie theatre just before the movies start.

Club member Colin Horabin will be making a presentation at the Nov 20 club meeting. Colin will focus primarily on the photographic issues and techniques used to capture his eagle images used in his slide show “The Plastic Planet” (shown at the Northwest Photofest in Kitimat) and a brief overview of preparing his slide show. Atlantic Members Receive MCAPA

Atlantic Zone Director Michiko Nishijima is pleased to announce that two CAPA members in the Atlantic Zone have been awarded the Maple Leaf Award (MCAPA) in recognition of their exceptional contribution to photography. Peter MacLean and Janet Crawford, both long-time members of Photo Fredericton, have also served as executive members of the club. Please join us in congratulating them on their service to CAPA and their contribution to photography.

CAPA Honours are awarded to recognize a high standard of both photographic achievement and photographic service to CAPA. The Maple Leaf Award is one of many Honours and Awards that are available to CAPA Members.
