Sheldon Boles joined the Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) in 2011 and was
appointed Director of Competitions in 2016. Over the next decade, he transformed CAPA’s
competitions program from a largely club-hosted operation into one of the most structured,
respected, and innovative photographic competition systems in Canada.

In 2017, Sheldon served on the CAPA Website Development Team, helping introduce CAPA’s
online competition platform and laying the groundwork for future growth and modernization.
When camera clubs became increasingly unable to host national competitions, Sheldon assumed
responsibility for the complete administration of all CAPA competitions, overseeing every aspect
of the process, including judge recruitment, pre-screening, score tabulation, awards
administration, and policy development. Under his leadership, annual competition participation
grew dramatically, increasing from 3,116 submitted images in 2016 to more than 8,500 by
2021. This increased engagement by members is truly significant to CAPA as it has led to
increases in new CAPA members and retention of existing members.

Among his many accomplishments, Sheldon:
• Established the CAPA Pre-Screening Committee of CAPA Judges.
• Developed the CAPA Judging Summary Report, now provided to all competition judges.
• Created and maintained CAPA’s Past Winners Database, which now contains more than
11,000 award-winning images.
• Reduced competition submission limits to improve judging efficiency and consistency.
• Built and mentored a dedicated competition team of volunteers with clearly defined
responsibilities, ensuring long-term program sustainability.
• Standardized competition formats and judging criteria, many of which remain in use
today.

In 2019, Sheldon accepted additional responsibilities as CAPA’s Exhibition Standards
Chairperson, overseeing requests for CAPA patronage and the approval of CAPA awards
presented by photographic organizations both nationally and internationally.

His commitment to governance culminated in the development of CAPA’s comprehensive
Competition Policy and Procedures Manual, formally adopted by the Board of Directors in
September 2024. This document consolidated years of experience and established a lasting
framework for future competition administration.

One of Sheldon’s most significant contributions has been his leadership in the rapidly evolving
field of artificial intelligence and photographic authenticity. In July 2022, he established the
CAPA AI Advisory Committee, bringing together experts from Canada and internationally,
including representatives from the Australian Photographic Society, the Photographic Society of
South Africa, and the Royal Photographic Society.

He subsequently developed CAPA’s Multi-Stage Image Forensic Analysis Model, incorporating
visual examination, metadata analysis, C2PA verification, Error Level Analysis, noise
evaluation, and pixel-level forensic techniques. This work positioned CAPA as a global leader in
image authentication and competition integrity.

Sheldon’s expertise has been recognized internationally through numerous publications and
presentations. His article, Image Content Authentication — Photographs vs AI-Generated
Images, was published by FIAP in 2024 and distributed to photographic organizations in 94
countries. Additional publications and presentations followed throughout the international
photographic community, including organizations in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa,
Mongolia, and the United States.

The standards and methodologies he developed have since been formally adopted by the
Australian Photographic Society, the Photographic Society of New Zealand, the Photographic
Society of South Africa, the World Photographic Cup, and the Ontario Council of Camera Clubs.
Sheldon has also represented CAPA internationally since 2019 as CAPA’s delegate to the Four
Nations Inter-Society Competition Committee, coordinating Canada’s annual submissions and
hosting the prestigious Four Nations Competition in both 2019 and 2023.

In 2025, he organized and administered the CAPA International Salon and continued to share his
expertise through educational presentations viewed by thousands of photographers worldwide.
In May 2025, Sheldon advised the Board of Directors of his intention to conclude his service as
Director of Competitions at the end of the 2025–2026 competition cycle. Demonstrating the
same dedication that characterized his tenure, he committed himself to mentoring his successor
and ensuring a smooth transition through comprehensive documentation, training, and support.
Although the traditional term for the CAPA Director of Competitions is two years, Sheldon
served in that role for ten years. During that time, he fundamentally reshaped CAPA’s
competitions program, strengthened its governance, expanded its national reach, and established
standards that have influenced photographic organizations around the world.

Through exceptional leadership, innovation, dedication, and service, Sheldon Boles has made an
extraordinary contribution to the Canadian Association for Photographic Art and to the broader
photographic community.

In recognition of these outstanding achievements, the CAPA Board of Directors is pleased
to award Sheldon Boles the Honorary Fellowship of CAPA (FCAPA Hon.) and the CAPA
Distinguished Service Award. Congratulations, Sheldon, and thank you for your exceptional service and lasting contributions to CAPA.
