Phil Cunnington receives CAPA Service Award

Janet Slater, FCAPA, CAPA District Rep and incoming President of SCCC presents Phil Cunnington with a CAPA Service Award in recognition of his 8 years of service to the club as President. 

When Phil initially took on this role, the membership only included people who had a common photography interest and wanted to gather together.  The club transitioned to include photographers of all degrees of skills.  Phil tirelessly devoted much of his time to ensure that this club ran smoothly and efficiently over these years. Phil’s role as President included planning yearly programs, meetings and photography activities for the members. He was instrumental in the constant growth of the club by promoting community awareness. This included writing articles for the local newspaper and having the club involved in local photography galleries.

This past year, during the pandemic, he focused on keeping the club active and vibrant by being an integral part of the BC/Yukon InterClub Speaker Series. He also transitioned the club’s in-person meetings over to Zoom, bringing in prominent speakers, allowing members to continue to learn, share and develop their shared love of photography. It is with pleasure, that the membership present Phil with this prestigious award to acknowledge his untiring dedication to the club.

PDF Final Reports Will No Longer Be Sent To Entrants Via An Email 

 

As of September 1, 2021, a copy of the final competition reports will no longer be sent out to participating entrants.  

 

The decision is based on the following problems and issues:  

 

– our internet provider limits the recipients in a single email message to 50 to 60.  Therefore, we have to send out multiple email messages for each competition. 

 

– our competition@capacanada.ca and my email addresses have been flagged by some internet services as a bulk spam message. 

 

– individuals are tighten up their computer’s firewall to protect themselves against spammers and hacker.  Consequently, our bulk email messages are being blocked. 

 

– individual or clubs have changed their email address and have not updated their CAPA account 

 

The final report continues to be posted on our website.  

 

The final competition report can ONLY be viewed after you have successfully logged into our website.  Once logged in, you will select the Competition Reports option from the Competitions dropdown menu. By doing so, the report will be presented to you. 

 

To save the report to your computer, you will need to select the File/Save As PDF option on your internet browser and select the folder where the report should be saved to. 

 

 

CAPA Is Introducing Honourable Mention E-Certificates  

 

The CAPA Board of Directors has approved the introduction of our new Honourable Mention e-certificates.   Most international photographic society have already adopted these types of e-certificates. 

 

Popularity Of Our CAPA Competitions 

 

We have included below a bar chart illustrating the total number of images submitted each year to our competitions. 

 

For the 2021-2022 cycle, we are forecasting a total of 9,500 images.

Volunteers Being Sought 

 

We are seeking volunteers to join our Competitions Team: 

  • Graphical artist who can assist us in updating and re-designing our current CAPA e-certificate template 

 

  • 2 to 3 volunteers to assist with the transposing photographer’s name, title of image and copy of image onto our e-certificates templates.  Individuals should have some experience using layers in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements 

 

  • An individual who has experience using the EntryWizard application and who would be interested in assisting with the setting up competitions as well as ‘re-consider-original-score’ process and ‘tie-breaking.’  Documentation is available which outlines how the EntryWizard application has been configured for our purposes.

Cette décision est basée sur les problèmes suivants : 

 

– notre fournisseur de services internet impose une limite de 50 à 60 destinataires pour un message. Il nous faut donc envoyer plusieurs messages pour joindre tous les participants d’un concours. 

– notre adresse de courriel, competition@capacanada.ca, ainsi que les miennes, ont été déclarées pourriel par certains services internet. 

 

– les gens augmentent le niveau de la sécurité de leur mur coupe-feu afin de se protéger des pourriels et des pirates informatiques. 

 

– des gens ou des clubs ont modifié leur adresse de courriel sans mettre à jour leur compte ACAP. 

 

 

Les rapports finaux continueront d’être affichés sur notre site Web.  

 

Le rapport final d’un concours peut être consulté seulement si vous êtes connecté sur notre site Web. Une fois connecté, sélectionnez Rapports des concours (‘’ Competition Reports’’) dans le menu Concours (‘’Competitions’’). Le rapport vous sera alors présenté. 

 

Sélectionnez l’option ‘’ File/Save As PDF’’ de votre fureteur internet pour conserver une copie du rapport sur votre ordinateur en indiquant dans quel répertoire le faire. 

 

L’ACAP ajoute des certificats de mention honorable  

 

Le conseil d’administration de l’ACAP a approuvé la création de notre nouveau certificat-e de mention honorable (e-certificate). La plupart des sociétés internationales de photographie ont déjà adopté ce type de certificats.

Nous sommes à la recherche de bénévoles pour se joindre à notre équipe des concours : 

  • Graphiste pouvant nous aider à améliorer ou renouveler l’actuel gabarit de certificat-e de l’ACAP.  

 

  • 2 à 3 bénévoles pour aider à transcrire le nom du photographe, le titre de l’image et une copie de l’image sur notre gabarit de certificat-e. Les intéressés doivent avoir de l’expérience dans l’usage des couches dans Photoshop or Photoshop Elements 

 

  • Une personne ayant de l’expérience avec l’application EntryWizard et qui est intéressée à aider à la préparation des concours ainsi qu’aux processus de ‘révision du pointage original’ (‘re-consider-original-score’) et de ‘bris d’égalité’ (‘tie-breaking’). De la documentation est disponible expliquant comment le logiciel EntryWizard a été configuré pour nos besoins.

The Scotsburn-Northumberland Amateur Photography Society (SNAPS) of Nova Scotia is saddened to announce the passing of their President, Ray Strickland. Ray was instrumental in the success of SNAPS. CAPA offers our condolences to his family, friends, and the members of SNAPS.

Grand Vistas and Intimate Details by Colin Campbell is on Sunday September 19, 2021 at 7:30pm ADT. After retiring from teaching, Colin Campbell found that photography provided a creative outlet. From 2016 to 2019, he and his wife Jennifer travelled across North America in an RV. In his talk, Colin will share with us not only the “big sky” moments, but also the more intimate details of line, colour and texture that these landscapes can provide.

CAPA Club Services Award 2020

CAPA Club Services Award 2020 

 

 

Due to Covid 19, many of our in-person events were delayed or cancelled for the latter half of 2019-2020 and the entire 2020-2021 season. In July, Doug Leahy was presented with the CAPA Club Services Medal which was originally supposed to presented during our May 2020 Awards Banquet. 

 

A Life Member of the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia, Doug joined the club in 1980. A long-time volunteer at the club, he was awarded the CAPA Club Services medal in part for his role as club liaison with the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park. Since 2003, Doug has led annual field trips to the wildlife park and he has been on the organizing Committee of the Winter at the Wildlife Park Print Exhibit since its inception, which includes removal and storage of the Print Exhibit in the off season at the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park.

  • A Quebec Zone team under the leadership of Alain Dubeau is feverishly busy preparing for CCC2023. Accommodation and conference room facilities at Laval University, the main event site, have been confirmed. Translation logistics and the communication plan are well underway. The design of the website is underway, based on the work of our Moncton’s colleagues. 
  • Most of the clubs in the Zone are gradually resuming their activities, but we noted that several continue their regular meetings in virtual mode, at least until January 2022. 
  • Several participants and clubs want the resumption of the judging courses of photos of CAPA in face-to-face mode, possibly in the fall of 2021, and await confirmation to this effect from the national course managers. 
  • After a completely “animal” summer from June 6 to August 29, with exhibitions of animal photographs from internationally renowned Quebec photographic artists, Jacques-André Dupont, Jean-Simon Bégin and Jérémie Leblond-Fontaine, the Musée national de photographie Desjardins (MNPD) of Drummonville, proud partner of CAPA for several years, is doing it again in greatness with a varied and high-quality fall program, from September 11 to December 19, starring Marcel Morin “The beauty of a people – India and Sri Lanka ”, René Derome“ The hinges – Social and political photographs of Quebec 1965-1971 ”and Jean Grothé“ Twenty years of poetry ”. A must see ! 
  • A few photo clubs in the Quebec City area were able to enjoy outdoor exhibitions of their works thanks to a generous collaboration from the City of Quebec. This was notably the case for the SPAQ (Société des photographes artisans de Québec) which exhibited 23 photos of their members on the Dorchester Bridge throughout the month of August. An exhibition of photographs of Club Dimension members is also on the program in the fall at an outdoor site to be confirmed. 
  • Also in the Quebec City area, the Maison de la photo de Québec is proud to present 2 outdoor exhibitions of interest to the public: 
  • “Repérages” by the Kinomada collective, bringing together a twinning of 40 photos of artists from Namur and Québec, is installed on the Dorchester Bridge from September 1 to October 1, 2021.

    • “Quebec and its wonders – Eugen Kedl, photographer”, offering 9 magnificent emblematic photographs of Old Quebec, is installed at the Jardins de l’Hôtel-de-Ville, from September 8 to 30, 2021.

Rapport de la Zone du Québec / Septembre 2021 

 

  • Une équipe de la Zone du Québec sous la gouverne d’Alain Dubeau s’active fébrilement à la préparation du CCC2023.  Les facilités d’hébergement et de salles de conférence de l’Université Laval, site principal de l’événement, ont été confirmées.  La logistique de traduction et le plan de communication sont en bonne voie d’élaboration.  Le design du site web est amorcé, basé sur le travail de nos collègues de Moncton. 
  • La plupart des clubs de la Zone reprennent progressivement leurs activités, mais nous avons noté que plusieurs continuent leurs réunions régulières en mode virtuel, au moins jusqu’en janvier 2022. 
  • Plusieurs participants et clubs souhaitent la reprise des cours de jugement de photos de l’ACAP en mode présentiel, possiblement à l’automne 2021, et attendent une confirmation à cet effet de la part des responsables nationaux des cours. 
  • Après un été complètement « animal » du 6 juin au 29 août, avec des expositions de photographies animalières provenant d’artistes photographes québécois de réputation internationale, Jacques-André Dupont, Jean-Simon Bégin et Jérémie Leblond-Fontaine, le Musée national de photographie Desjardins (MNPD) de Drummonville, fier partenaire de l’ACAP depuis plusieurs années, récidive en grandeur avec une programmation automnale variée et de grande qualité, du 11 septembre au 19 décembre, mettant en vedettes Marcel Morin «  La beauté d’un peuple – Inde et Sri Lanka », René Derome « Les charnières – Photographies sociales et politiques du Québec 1965-1971 » et Jean Grothé « Vingt ans de poésie ».  À voir absolument ! 
  • Quelques clubs photo de la région de Québec ont pu profiter d’expositions extérieures de leurs œuvres grâce à une généreuse collaboration de la Ville de Québec.  Ce fut notamment le cas de la SPAQ (Société des photographes artisans de Québec) qui a pu exposer 23 photos de leurs membres sur le pont Dorchester pendant tout le mois d’août.  Une exposition de photographies des membres du Club Dimension est aussi au programme à l’automne dans un site extérieur à confirmer.

The Toronto International Salon of Photography is going into its 128th year! The competition is the oldest one of its kind in North America and the second oldest in the World!
