English presentation : Wednesday, April 10, 2024

Pacific 4:00 PM – Mountain 5:00 PM – Central 6:00 PM – Eastern 7:00 PM – Atlantic 8:00 PM (Canada)

Theme/topic of the presentation: AI technology in Photographic Competitions

Generative AI can be used to create highly realistic synthetic images, which can present challenges for photographic organizations who are struggling with how to distinguish AI generated images from real photographs. These challenges are prevalent as AI generated images have received awards in several photographic exhibitions. As the lead member of CAPA’s AI Committee and the Director of Competitions for CAPA Sheldon has conducted research looking into setting guidelines for the use and detection of AI technology in photographic competitions.

If you are a photographic judge or interested in entering local, national or international photographic competitions or simply interested in the use of AI technology in the processing of your images this presentation will help you navigate the guidelines and rules for AI generated image in-painting, image out-painting and text to image renderings.

Sheldon Boles holds the position of Director of Competitions for CAPA, a role that he has held for eight years. In this role Sheldon manages and oversees all of CAPA’s national members competitions as well as CAPA’s involvement in international competitions such as the 4 Nations Competition between Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Sheldon has been looking into and discussing AI technology since before 1992 when his first paper on Artificial Intelligence titled “The Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police” was published. More recently Sheldon has written two additional AI related articles titled “Content Authentication – Photograph vs Generative AI image” and “CAPA’s Stance on AI-Generated Image in Photo Competitions”. In the decades since Sheldon’s first paper on AI technology he has gained a lot of experience in information technology, particularly in the areas of computer programming, research analysis, computer simulations, testing new initiatives, and managing a province-wide technical support section.
