Red to Green

“Red to Green”

Image with colour and contrast edit, with a bit of burn on edges. The contrasts of rust and natural leaves intrigued me:  Nature and man-made structures both with amazing form and colour, and both as important to us.

Biography

pic of Jane Appleby In high school I took Photography and was interested in having a creative career in the arts. However my father encouraged me to study something more “practical” and hence I completed a science degree and had a large family with my husband who I met at the Hospital I worked at. I took up painting as a past time and then professionally.

Recently digital photography became a big part of my art and capturingthe image I wanted became faster than painting it and adjustments could be made easily.

I prefer to not use a tripod as I like to walk about and play with angles and contrasts establishing compositions quickly and intuitively in response to what interests me. It also brings immediate gratification being able to view the result on the LCD screen.

My first digital camera was a 3 megapixel nikon cool pix with CYMK which I felt captured the colours well. I love to put colour in my work and if nature provides it I try to capture it.

Now I take my Canon 60D and several favourite lenses on my outdoor excursions where I wish to capture the feeling and spirit of the place. Often I do both paintings and photographs on the same day. I also enjoy
making abstract compositions and close-ups.

I won an honourable mention in the 2009 CAPA Greeting Card Category of a winter scene captured by the little nikon as well as another image of black and white bikes with my Canon. I am hooked on taking photos and hope to improve as a photographer.
